When is a battle considered a D-day battle?

I've always thought that there was only one d-day in 1944 but I found out there was one near the end of 1943.

Why don't we hear about it as much as Normandy?

Actually I was reading about Tarawa but I guess husky counts because of the 1st army infantry and stuff

'D-Day' in military parlance just refers to the day on which something will occur, like the start of a major operation. (The same logic goes for 'H-hour'). Of course D-Day is now popularly associated with the Normandy landings, though other operations also have a D-Day. I would guess that you might be reading about the Allied invasion of Sicily.

The beginning of any battle is generally considered "D-day" with the opening hour considered "H-hour".

This is used as a coordination measure, example:

Tasks:
Coastal Bombardment Begins at H-8 (8 hours before H hour)
Airdrops of 82nd and 101st begins at H-2
Beach landings begin at H+5 (5 hours after H hour)

3rd Army seizes Smallville at D+30 (30 days after D day)

etc.

D-day was just the designation they gave to the start of any operations but more specifically to landings. There were many D-days but you are right most people equate it with June 6th, 1944 but for every island that was fought over in the Pacific there was a D-day.
