While majgross has pointed out that the man leads the waltz with his left but he hasn't noticed that nearly every partnership dance - from waltz to foxtrot to salsa to bachata - always starts on the left foot. So you're right, you really might also wonder why a man dancing a waltz - or any other dance - also leads with the left.*
The other thing no one but Alzorg seems to have mentioned or considered that nearly every military in the world and throughout history have begun their marches with the left foot. If it really was a random 50/50 pick, then you'd find countries and militaries that began their marches on the right foot. But - to the best of my knowledge - there isn't a single one. It's always left foot first.
Until someone points out otherwise - or finds a list of militaries that march right foot first - I'd say Alzorg probably has the best answer in that it probably has something to do with the good, ol' days when soldiers had to run around with heavy, left-handed shields, which has become a tradition that has simply continued through the millenia.
*The answer to why partnership dances are nearly always led by the man's left foot is because contact with the female is nearly always on the right side of the man's body, which leaves his left foot free to make the first move. |

I guess it has to do more with the hands then the feet.
Most people are right handed, and thus when you turn to attack someone, you step forward with your left leg so it's not as awkward. So left leg first.
This can even go back to ancient times, when Spartans for example would thrust forward with their left leg first to generate more power, since they held spears and swords in their right hands.
I'm not sure if this is the exact reason why, but it makes sense to me. |
