When should I talk to an Air Force recruiter?
|
I'm 15, going on 16 and I plan on going into the U.S Air Force right out of high school. When should I start talking to a recruiter about career options and just general information?
-All Information Appreciated- Additional Details I'm pretty much more than positive that I want to join, and I'm sure of what job I want. I didn't know that you get to pick where you get stationed

Heed my advice. Don't talk to a recruiter until you have made your decision about joining the military. That means what job you want and where you want to be stationed.
Talk to active duty and former Airmen. Do searches online.
The recruiter should be the LAST person you talk to.
Remember, the recruiters job primarily is to convince you to join and to do so quickly. He WILL answer your questions but he won't give you the WHOLE picture. That's why it's important that you do personal research.
Hope this helps |

If you can, take an ROTC program at your high school. You can go see a recruiter now. They will give you information and let you know what you need to do. They will also let you take the ASVAB now. |

Well, you may want to obtain a VERY high score on your ASVAB test to get a variety of career selections.
It would be best to see a recruiter during your junior or senior year becasue they want to help you pick out the job and immediately send you to training.
The Airforce Basic Military Training is in Lackland, Texas where you have to go through to become a memeber of the AirForce.
The U.S. Air Force’s Basic Military Training (BMT) is eight and a half weeks long and is conducted at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. During BMT, personnel are referred to as trainees until they have started their eighth week of training, which is when they are referred to as Airmen and are allowed to wear their dress blues. Trainees receive military instruction (including the Air Force core values, flight and individual drill, and living area inspections), academic classes (covering topics such as Air Force history, dress and appearance, military customs and courtesies, ethics, security, and alcohol/drug abuse prevention and treatment), and field training (including protection against biological and chemical attack, basic marksmanship on the M-16 rifle and M9 pistol as well as first aid). Following BMT, airmen go to a technical school (or “tech school”) where they learn the specifics of their Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC), which is similar to the MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) in the Army and Marines, or the Navy's NEC (Naval Enlisted Classification) code |

The answers above me are great ones, but as a heads up you do NOT get to chose your duty station.
You will fill out a "dream sheet" in BMT which they will try to get you to, but if your job is not applicable to that base (ie: A-10 mechanic at Wright-Patt), you will go where the USAF needs you to. Don't get your hopes up for Germany, because you could wind up in North Dakota. |

Wait until midway through your senior year of high school. Reasoning is that you can only be in the delayed entry program (DEP) for 365 days. Besides your ASVAB score, what jobs are open are dependent on what A schools are open immediately after a basic class graduates. If you sign on the dotted line 11 mos. before HS graduation, your A school of choice better be fitting in that window of opportunity. This is part of the reason that some people get screwed out of what job they really wanted. Definately talk to a airman before you sign up.
(I'm from ND, and Minot AFB is a lame place to end up if you think you are going to see the world) |
