When will we know we have won the war on terror ?

It will never end. Every oppressive government needs an enemy of the state. Bush uses the threat of terrorism the same way the eternal war was used in Orwell's 1984 - to keep the populace off balance, confused, and malleable.

The "threat" comes from an enemy that has no sovereign power and has no central organization. The idea there is a "threat" is used to justify the wholesale revocation of civil liberties, the abrogation of due process, spying on dissenters, and the implementation of a quasi-police state with secret trials and military tribunals.

They are going to fight back against us just as vehemently as they have been. No slowing down, no backing away. I dunno what Bush is thinking by acting like he's confident we can do this. Who is he trying to fool? The American people? Well, unfortunately for him, the American people are smarter than that.

Terrorism started well over 2000 years ago and will not end before the end of the human species. The war will never be won because the war refuses to recognize that the other guy has a legitimate complaint. What about the terrorism of the 1770's?

There will never be one moment when we just "win". We are winning so far. There have not been any big time terrorist attacks on US soil and there have been several foiled plots.

Winning it? You can't win it. Terrorism is a tactic, islamic fascists are the enemy. When the fascists are gone and people mellow out then the war on Islamic Fascists is over. Some other wacko group will then start up with terrorist tactics.

And if the liberals have their way, we won't win. We'll just walk away and hope that they won't hurt us.

When the media and world opinion condemn terrorism, right now it's a propaganda war and starting to tilt against them. Otherwise, it will not soon end unless the terrorists give it up as a winless cause or the world is dominated by them.
