where does the united nations get their armies? do the members contribute their troops? is it effective?

The UN does not have an army, per say. Each country that is a member of the UN has an army, such as the four military branches of the US, the French Foreign Legion in France, the British Royal Marines in Britain, the Mounties in Canada, etc. |

Yes. They come from member's military forces. They did wear blue helmets as "observers." I know only two times they were used as full combat troops not just observers. One was Korea where they were in full combat and did prevent North Korean conquest of South Korea at significant cost of life (I'm ambivalent about that effort). the other was in Bosnia but I don't know how much armed resistance the UN forces actually provided.
spdrmnky -- a little mistake: Mounties "RCMP" I believe is the Canadian federal police force. They aren't soldiers. Canada has regular military forces that have participated in support of Britain in both world wars and Korea, I believe. It's still argued today whether a Canadian pilot or an Aussie soldier on the ground killed "The Red Baron" (Von Richthofen) in WW I. |
