Where to live off post at Ft. Bliss, TX?

Where to live off post at Ft. Bliss, TX?

We are PCSing to Ft Bliss, TX in Aug!! We are def. living off post, but we would like to know the where the safer comm unties are. We have 2 young daughters, and are moving from a small post in Mid MO.
We have heard of the area ban from Military and the horror stories of drug dealers, and the need to brush up on our spanish.

Can some please tell me something positive about this community?? We don't mind living up to an hour away from post. That's how we commute now.

El Paso has it's good and bad. The population in El Paso is predominately hispanic, I would say close to 80%. I would recommend living in the North East area of El Paso, specifically the North Hills area. North Hills is about a 10 minute drive from post and is a relatively safe area. The North Hills area is also where some of the Post housing is located and you have a greater possibility of living near other Military families. The homes in this area are not priced very high for buying or renting and are quite nice. There is an Elementary School (Dr Nixon) and Middle School ( Nolan Richardson) within walking distance if you live in the North Hills area. Both are quality schools for the El Paso area.

There is really no other major cities within an hour of El Paso. The next big city would be Tucson and Phoenix 6 to 8 hours away in Arizona or Austin, Dallas, San Antonio 8 to 10 hours away in the Central Texas area.

Las Cruces is about 45 minutes to an hours drive away depending on traffic. There is also the north east side of town that comes to mind as a good place to go (Lee Trevino, George Dieter and Joe Battle areas) and from those you're typically looking at anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour drive depending on traffic. Another area to look at would be out towards Transmountain (past the Wal Mart and other strip mall area there is a decent housing area) . Whatever you do stay AWAY from the area around the Cielo Vista Mall area.

How long it takes him to get to work every morning will also depend on if he has to come to main post or Biggs Air Field and which gate he goes through.

I agree with the previous poster about living on post.... if you can get on post housing do so it is better cost wise in the long run around here for the most part. Everyone we know who does live off post wishes they didn't because their rent/bills are outrageous.

How many bedrooms are you entitled to and what rank is your sponsor is you don't mind me asking?

I would try to get a place on post honestly.
I'm staying off post right now and wish I were on.
I got my house which is a 3 bedroom for 750, but honestly I found a diamond in the rough. I checked out 10 other houses while looking, all but this one were trashed in crap neighborhoods and almost every single one had a busted window. Was pretty amazing to see how routine busted windows were.
I live in a pretty decent quiet neighborhood but we still get out bits of trouble, last week my car was broken into and 2 days later some homeless person was going door to door harassing people for money until my wife pulled a gun on him.
I live in the NE which is one of the better parts of town, NW is another nice area and than there is Horizon city which is slightly upper scale but a good drive from base.
The average off base home that is in decent condition will run you approx 850+ a month, look to spend much more in horizon.

What's your rank and how big is your family?

I totally agree with the last posters. Ive been to el paso and its not the safest city, esp.right now with all the drug cartels. I would seriously consider living on base because you have 2 young daughters. Good luck! Oh and new mexico is a few hours away and sooo totally worth the drive! Its beautiful!
