I remember it was breaking news on the evening news. I knew right then and there that War was going to happen because there was no way the World was going to let Saddam, the second coming of Hitler, control major Oil Reserves and have control of an OPEC Nation.

I was working for the ODSCINT (Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Intelligence) at USAEUR HQ (U.S. Army Europe) in Heidelberg, GE.
The phone rang about 4:30AM and I was told to come as quickly as possible. I took the A5 from my home in Oberhausen to Heidelberg. I knew something big was up when they wouldn't allow me to drive my car onto the base - fortunately I didn't have to walk far. As soon as I got in, I 'read the news'. Crazy times. I thought we'd be putting troops in right away and sending in Hornets from carriers in the gulf, but that never happened.
To this very day, I believe that if we'd put troops between Saddam and Kuwait and had Hornets busting tanks immediately, that Saddam would've given up and gone home and we could have avoided the whole ugly mess. True, we didn't have enough troops to stop Saddam at that point, but I believe that if he had to go through US Army and Marines to get to Kuwait City, he'd have known he had an azz-whoppin' a comin' and he would have stayed in Iraq. |

I was not quite in fourth grade yet.
I was very glad that my Dad had managed to get out of the Army a year prior, and kind of spooked at the thought that if he'd stayed in, he might have gone, and that a lot of my old friends' fathers probably had gone.
Little did I know that I'd spend more than two years in Iraq myself, a decade and a half later. ;) |
