Here's a scenario:
2020
The US Economy, having never recovered from the crash of 2008, is weighed down by the responsibility of policing the globe. This also has a negative effect on Canada due to proximity and trade agreements.
However, the European Union, due to tighter trade alliances with an emergent Russian economy and Asian markets, thrives and becomes the largest economy the world has ever seen. Standard of living is very high, and military spending very low since the US and NATO have taken on all the peacekeeping assignments.
in 2021, Canada petitions for inclusion in the European Union. Though there is initial resistance, it is accepted as a member in 2031. The North Atlantic Union is born. Canada surrenders it's currency, and its right to make war, effectively becoming a member state of the EU (now NAU) like France, Italy or (by then) the UK.
The USA freaks right out. It can't allow a major superpower at it's northern border, but it doesn't have the economic resources or UN clout to do anything about it. It can't fight Canada, the EU and Russia all at the same time and hope to win. Even nuclear conflict is not an option.
And thus, Canada finally sees the day when it is more powerful and influential than the USA.

From my perspective as a Canadian... I'm not going to hate on any Americans reading this, because that just isn't the Canadian way...
But, so it is known for all those who may be ignorant to this beautiful Country called Canada...
1st- we don't ALL speak French
2nd- we don't ALL play hockey, fudge some don't even like watching hockey- some of us would rather follow NFL over the NHL
3rd- The US doesn't care about us (hence #4). I think Americans just hate on us because of our chilled out ways. Our Government does spend too much time trying to play nice to the American politicians though.
4th- Most citizens don't believe America to be our "Big Brother" merly our neighburs to the south who managed to elect someone like George Bush two terms in a row (to be fair though, we managed to vote in an equally ill fitted leader two times in a row as well).
5th- What Country seperates the US from Russia right now? Imagine if Russia was to form a coallition with Canada... scary situation.

Its funny that you think being a "world superpower" entails bossing around every country in the world like the US does. Canada may not have all the military power of the US, but guess what, IT DOESNT NEED IT. You know why? Because Canada has no enemies, Canada treats other countries with respect. Everyone in the world hates the United States, and thats the truth. |
