WWI
Buy now doubt this was the most brutal.
Days on end stuck in a water/mud filled trench, Under constant sniper fire and bombardment, Then being sent over the top into mass machine gun fire whilst under a barrage from your own artillery
If you want a great incite to WWI read this book
The War the infantry Knew.
It was writen by soldier that were on the front line during WWI |

I think the civil war physically and emotionally. You have to realize that you are taken apart inside when you know you are fighting against you own people, your own country. Its a horrible experience to go through. |

From the US civil War up to WWI. This was the birth of modern corporate war.
Soldiers have always been fodder, but with these wars we see the cynical meat grinder for what it is.
I long for the day when all the soldiers turn around, frag their commanders and walk away from the battlefield. |

What an absolutely heartbreaking and thought provoking piece of film. Arent we just so very lucky that we dont have to experience this. I think it must be hard for anyone who faces death and distruction. |

I would assume any war is hell on troops. They may die (in fact, have a very good chance of it), regardless of which war they fight in; and that can't be good for the psyche. |

I think any war is brutal for soldiers, for any human, civilian or military. |

Crusades were pretty bad. WWI is just bad because it was so recent. And of the most recent ones it was pretty bad in it's own way. Every war has it's issues. Vietnam was horrible in a whole new way for Americans.
Imagine going to war where you didn't want to be, fighting against an enemy who could slaughter your friends but you couldn't find, while living in a country where everything was foreign to you in every possible way, and then on top of that when you get home people call you a murderer.
However I still would say the crusades. Even the lightest wound could be fatal and there as no such thing as sanitation or anaesthetic. Even if you survived the initial wound disease was likely to take you soon after. Even a healthy soldier could die of disease. Not to mention the appalling food, marching in the desert in armour...
Then the battles... Today you fight your enemy from across a field. If you get tired you can duck down and rest a bit. In a melee you fight until you either die or there are no more enemies to fight. If you tire you die. You can kill 100 men but it only takes 1 more to kill you.
And once you were done you were greeted with a field covered in blood and body parts. Finding your friends, who came with you from home, dead. And now you're in a part of the world you don't even know where it is and have no idea how to get home. |

I'd say it was the Revolutionary War with all the harsh winters when lots of people froze or starved to death. |

The worst were/are the entirely unnecessary pointless/useless and ultimately thankless ones: Vietnam and the current occupation of Iraq and attempt to subjugate the Middle East. Saddam was our lever/puppet against OPEC, our leader(s) made everything worse for everyone permanently; WW1 and 2 vets had something to be proud of, purely political wars make fools of the combatants who suffer just the same. |
