WW1 - I agree tank
WW2 - For MILITARY purposes - you'd have to say the atomic bomb (not good for society as a whole). |

I would also say radar, but for that you need to include Airplanes
The speed of developement in Aviation during WW1 and especially WW2 is mindboggling
If you get a chance watch some of the history of aviation during the WW's pretty incredible |

Vaccinations for polio, and the rocket the V-2. It lead to the rocket science that got us to the Moon. |

I can name a few:
- Bazooka
- Flame Thrower
- Enigma (German Ciphering Machine)
- V1 and V2 rockets (German invention, forerunner of present missiles)
- Katyusha (Russian multiple rocket launchers) |

The tank in WW1 definately, it broke the stalemate of trench warfare
I cant believe no one has mentioned the bouncing bomb of World war 2. It devastated the German Hydro Electricity plants and brought a high percentage of its industry to a standstill. A work of genius.
Quick note to the guy who said the Russian AK 47
The reason it was called that is because it was built by a man named Kalashnikov (cant remember his 1st name) in 1947. Two years after WW2 ended. |

World war 1 i don't know but World war 2 in my opinion the best military invention is the technology that led to creation of the Internet. Thanks to the Americans |

You are right about the tank for world war one.. however the first valve electronic computer ,,codename "colossus"
invented by the British, used at a place called bletchley park to break the German enigma codes stands head and shoulders above radar! ..- though ill will agree that's radar is a damn good second place. |

agree strongly with the radar being a good one but the best had to be the bomb. That stopped the war quick. I really never understood why we needed to bomb 2 cities tho; the first one would have been enough!
the british use of poison gas land mines was a bright spot in inventiveness
realistically the machine gun was the game winner for WW1 |

I think you're right. |

Well, the Germans invented pretty much everything so i'll pick one that you probably never heard of and was the forerunner to the cruise missile............ Fritz X, a rocket powered flying bomb dropped by an aircraft and guided onto it's target by radio control, used very effectively to sink the Italian battleship Roma, one plane, one bomb, bye bye battleship. For you maritime buffs check out the Roma, the Italians built some great looking ships and this was one of their best. |

yes, WW1 the tank and ww2 may be the rocket engine |

I agree for WWI - for WWII I have to say the dramatic improvement in aviation especially the British Spitfire and P51D Mustang! |

Duck (by the marines)/duct (by construction workers) tape, which was especially made to stick even when wet (hence the duck part) (USA)
The computer, originally made to do artillery calculations (USA)
The gas mask
The bullet proof/resistant (Germany, WWI) vest
inflatable life jacket/preserver/vest (U.S.)
Atomic energy (U.S.)
I/R/ night goggles (U.S.)
FM radio
Battery Powered generators
modern weather tracking
Radar

Yes it would have to be the Great British Invention the tank so named because to keep it secret from the Germans in WW1 it was shipped in massive crates and the contents labelled water tank, although this was disproved when a tank drove into deep water and sank....Not a very good water tank.....WW2 flame frower in all it's guizes... |

No doubt the Tank was key during WW1 but during WW2 I would have to say the use of Airplanes Greatly influenced the outcome of the War more effectively than any other single weapon! Without Air support D-Day would have never been a success and the battles in the South Pacific would have never been Great or Beneficial if not for the might of Air support in all arenas!!!!! |

well best for everyday people or for war ?
the fully automatic rifle in ww2 changed the face of war forever
but i have to agree with radar and maybe the jet engine
had a bigger impact on everyone
and for world war one i'll have to say the medical advances that came from treating wounds and gangreen in ww1 |

wwI: The airplane, as it made the trenches vulnerable, so it changed the war.
wwII: Here's 4 anyway:
*Proximity-fuzed AA shells
*Liberty ship assembly line - created more supply ships than the German u-boats could sink.
*The semi-auto rifle
*The jet aircraft; the British were the first to get them into squadron service. |

I would just like to point out that Germany did NOT invent the jet engine. It was an English chap called Frank Whittle.
Radar was a very important invention because it helped us win the Battle Of Britain. If Britain had fell then Europe was Germanys for the taking!
The Spitfire was the most important plane! looked sweet and it kicked jerry ***! |

I think your ideas are basically correct if you consider that the tank revolutionised warfare and radar is so important in modern aviation. Modern shipping uses Radar as well going through busy shipping lanes such as the English Channel.
mymoneydo... The Germans didn't invent Jet aircraft. The jet engine was invented by an English gent called Frank Whittle before the war. Unfortunately as so often the case in the UK the British Government and RAF were to stupid to see the early benefits of the jet engine unlike the Germans. The British however did have a jet fighter towards the end of WW2 called the Gloster Meteor which was the only allied jet fighter to see action. |

British 'Q' Ships in the 1st World War were responsible for the destruction of many German submarines. The 'Q' ship was a trawler style vessel, which housed deck mounted guns under camouflage. They flew neutral flags, which was their downfall in terms of the European theatre of War and its attitude to 'fairness in combat'
The Rolls Royce Merlin aircraft engine successfully used in the Spitfire and the Mustang fighters would be my choice for WW2 |

World war I I would have to say the crew served machine gun one for example teh M-2 Browning which is stil in service today
But also the flu Vaccine was another importent development after the almost plague back then
Also the development of the assembly line, which helped society move in leaps and bounds, replaceable parts made the price of items so much cheaper now that they wen;t one of a kind hand made items.
WWII Radar and sonar are very important again not in just military use, Jet aircraft and the beginnings of atomic energy. |

Ok, bear with me here. Maxi pads! They were made for soaking up the blood in gaping wounds for battlefield medicine. When the war ended, they began marketing them to women and were the predecessor to tampons. It's not the greatest technological invention, but if it hadn't been for that step, we might all still be using rags. Ugh! So I have to really appreciate that one.
Technologically, I have to give a lot of credit to radar. Submarines and submersibles, and the jet, were great inventions (submersibles for underwater research and exploration), and atomic development led to energy breakthroughs. |

Do not forget the medical advances & related equipment.
I think one of the most important WW2 'off shoots' were rockets (V1 & V2) which were the first stages of space travel. |

ww1 - the british created the mark 1 tank.
ww2 - the americans built the atomic bomb. and the british built collosus the first electronic computer built to crack german enigma codes. |
