Black Hawk Down because I know several of the people who are portrayed in the movie in real life and trained with 3rd Ranger Battalion before they left for Somolia in the summer of 1993.
SSG Strucker later became my chaplain in the 82nd ABN and I helped do the funeral detail for SGT Ruiz (RIP Ranger) in real life. |

Black Hawk Down is an awesome movie and I appreciate any film that can come out of Hollywood with so much original story intact but Saving Private Ryan is one of the greatest movies anyone has made. It's at times shockingly realistic and doesn't pull punches, but it also goes so far beyond explosions and action when characters are explored and developed so deeply. I think the questions it raises about sacrifice and worth are really compelling as well. Basically, any work of art, whether a painting, book, or movie, is truly great when it effects someone deeply and I've never met anyone who wasn't struck by Saving Private Ryan. Like I said, Black Hawk Down is an awesome movie and it's among my favorites, but Saving Private Ryan goes above and beyond practically any movie I've ever seen. It's definitely my favorite of the two. |

Can't and won't choose. Both were different times and places. They both deserve our respect, as both are about real life heroes.
Even movies like "We Were Soldiers (although not based on fact) deserve a place in the "favorites" category. |

Black Hawk Down, a lot of my buddies actually were there helping to save the rangers. Contrary to what most people say 2-14 did a lot to help killed a lot of enemy forces, and I think only had a couple of casualties. |
