The Civil War, everyone that fought and died in it was American. The war produced about 970,000 casualties (3% of the population), including approximately 620,000 soldier deaths—two-thirds by disease. |

OK, there were soldier 498,333 deaths in the Civil War, including CSA
and USA troops. However, one could argue that Confederate Troops were not "US Troops" and total "US Troop" deaths were 224,097.
In WWII there were soldier 407, 316 deaths and 1,079,162 total causalities.
So depending on how you look at it, either the Civil War or WWII.
No matter which way you count it, Civil War Soldier Deaths were NOT "more than all other wars combined" as there were about 644,855 deaths in all wars excluding the Civil War. |

Richard K, here's a rundown for you. WW11. Total number served 16,112,556: combat deaths totaled 291,557: wounded in combt 670,846: other deaths 113,800 which included 15,000 amputees and 105,000 prisoners of war.
Were thousands of doctors and 60,000 nurses and 3,000,000 American's that volunteered for home front duties.
Estimated casualties of other nations in WW11 record dead, military and civilian were, 22,060,000; wounded 34,400,000. Germany reported it's casualties at almost 10,000,000; Soviet Russia with 15,000,000; Poland with 5,507,320; China with 980,161; France at 749,710; Greece 574,600; Yugoslavia 1,685,000; Czechoslovakia 500,000; Italy 179,801; Italy 179,801; Netherlands 247,925; Austria 700,000; Belgium 109,975; Finland 59,609; Philippines 118,442.
As you can see, war is a bloody occupation. War is meant to kill your enemy before he kills you. Just think of the above numbers, with-out them...might we all be speaking German today? |

There is general consensus on the Civil War - which I do agree with. This is especially true if you calculate the war dead as a percentage of the population. I believe the population of all the states, Union and Confederate, at the time of the Civil War was about 40 million, at the time of WWII, the population was about 140 million. Using the figures quoted by others here, Civil War deaths were at least three times higher than WWII as a function of the population. This, and other reasons, makes the Civil War our nation's "worst" war - by far. |

The Civil War
The Union armies had from 2,500,000 to 2,750,000 men. Their losses, by the best estimates:
Battle deaths: 110,070
Disease, etc.: 250,152
Total 360,222
The Confederate strength, known less accurately because of missing records, was from 750,000 to 1,250,000. Its estimated losses:
Battle deaths: 94,000
Disease, etc.: 164,000
Total 258,000
The leading authority on casualties of the war, Thomas L. Livermore, admitting the handicap of poor records in some cases, studied 48 of the war's battles and concluded:
Of every 1,000 Federals in battle, 112 were wounded.
Of every 1,000 Confederates, 150 were hit.
Mortality was greater among Confederate wounded, because of inferior medical service. The great battles, in terms of their toll in dead, wounded, and missing is listed on this site:
quoted from http://www.civilwarhome.com/casualties.htm
I believe the WWII casualties for the U.S. were around 300,000. |
