I would have to say Spartans. Who would win in combat is a different issue. If firearms were involved the Marines would be victorious, if it were hand to hand the Spartans would be victorious. Spartans overall had what would be an illegal training regimen today. Their ability to stand fast in the face of danger and their self sacrifice is unparalleled in the world's history. |

You can not compare them on the idea who would win on a battlefield. It is obvious machine guns trump swords and shields. You have to look at there training and in that sense the Spartans are the greatest warriors in history. The Agoge training program which started early in a Spartan boys life is the longest and most difficult boot camp in history. |

sure the 300 marines could hose down a hundreds of thousands persians with m249's and m4's but isn't that cheating? good luck getting them to kill 500 with a bronze sword and a shield. the spartans were trained since they were 10 years old. and they didn't use technology to help them win. they used skill. |

Arm the Marines with just bladed weapons and without any support then it would be a fight. But to have the Spartans with spears, swords and shields against the Marines planes, helicopters, artillery, tanks, rifles, etc. etc., is a ridiculous comparison.
It would be like a t-ball first grade baseball team playing the Yankees and the Yankees not holding back. Useless slaughter and serve no point whatsoever. |

Although there were 300 Spartans present at the defence of Thermopylae, there were at least 4000 allies involved on the first two days and 1500 men involved in the fatal last stand. Still a tiny figure compared to the forces against them, but more than the legend which forgets some contributors. |

This question isn't really fair to either side. If marines fought the Spartans using Spartan weapons after some training then the marines would get slaughtered.
If the Spartans used marine weapons and fought the marines, I would still have to say bye bye marines.
Like I said before Spartans were bred to fight and die. |

No matter what anyone says the modern man aka marine is a superior person, we are larger and stronger nowdays then we were 1000 years ago and are training is superior as well as our diets and exercise regimes. Hand to hand marines would still win due to evolution of the species. |
