UK, because we don't fire on our own troops or allies (the number one phrase in the US must be 'blue on blue'!). We don't beat and rape the inhabitants of the country we are serving in. We usually get our strategy right (far more than the US) and historically we have been better tacticians - Vietnam anyone?. Oh and we actually look after our ex-service man and woman and don't just leave them to rot. Oh and we have the SAS - which would beat any American special forces unit hands down - Nuff said. |

As far as the British Royal Marines vs The United States Marines, The British Royal Marines are better trained and more professional in my experience. |

Well Tim, it's got to be the English (or Brit, depends where you're from).
We have the best school for Officers in the World (Sandhurst).
Lets face it, our enemies come here to learn how to beat us!!
We are a warrior race with the best mix of all the fighting forces over the last 2000 years in our blood.
America?
Well, they're our cast offs aren't they.
That said, putting a coke machine on a battle front is a nice touch. |

id say the British because most of the armed forces in america are reserves so there for not expierianced to the degree of the British forces. |

As an ex member of the British special forces, I would have to say that for its size the British army is the best in the world. The US never had any special forces until the early 60s, and we helped train their Delta force. I am beginning to wonder about the Royal navy and air force and even parts of the army. I am sorry to say this but the downhill slide began when they allowed so many females into the services. Who can forget the image of that fat navy woman on the Iranian boat, sat there smoking, what a disgrace. I got to know a lot of Americans when we were training them and you couldn't meet more decent people. |

British is the best trained
The british undergo the most arduous training of all & are people that want to be there not reservists who have to attend.
British is about training where as American is about numbers.
Yes the Americans have the money, kit & numbers but the Brits have the better trained soldiers & use rules correctly.
Americans are too gun ho |

Considering the fact that pretty much every country sends THEIR Special Forces to be trained by OURS - I`d say the British have the best Armed Services - most every other is a copy of ours. |

the brits simply because the americans run each unit, ship etc as a single and individual business and keep things very 'in house', where as, the brits have something called tri-service or joint service and are working towards being able to work either together or independently of each other...communication is better which allows them to be more stream-lined and effective
Oh bring it on you damn yanks..you're all by british decendents anyhow. You only agreed to help in ww2 if we funded your asses and that loan has only recently been repaid...thanxs for that...you got involved because of pearl harbour so it was self preservation not the helping hand of a neighbour. We should charge you for assisting your thieving oil baron of a president for dragging us into iraq. On a man-to-man basis we'd kick your buts back into the tea clippers. Of course you have bigger numbers and bigger budget, compare the size of your country to ours, wonder what the results would be per capita? |

Hi there.
It is still the English right now. The effectiveness of your armed service relies on the quality of your soldiers and the Brits are still on average better educated and better team workers. The Americans are indeed prone to shoot at anything, but this is more to do with poor training and stupidity than aggression.
Cheers, Steve. |

Quite simply we (the Brits) have the best services in terms of training, tradition, ethos and skill. However, the US has far superior forces in terms of equipment, numbers and budget. |

Being a scot I would have to say British seeing as we don't shoot our own guys as much |

The British Armed forces are the best trained in the world, their skill base is superior as are our training regimes. The American forces use our people to train their own, there are UK training officers based on the majority of American bases |

Does it REALLY matter??? I have served in the RN and met several US Navy personel and found them to be just fine!! |

For equipment it must be American but for personnel, it must be the UK. |

There is no English armed service because the members of the armed forces are drawn from all of the British Isles. |

Well it's all down to Special Forces. Unfortunately you have 'Special Farces" enough said. |

It is said the British Armed Forces are the best in world, the most highly trained. Although the yanks can boast about their enormous military budget, its not quantity but quality that counts.
Whenever there has been a military foul up and friendlies are killed its because the yanks totally mess it up, and if there don't kill their own side its British troops killed instead. I haven't heard of an incident where the Brits have messed up and killed US troops by mistake. Have you? |

you are describing a father son relationship. neither would be the same without each other. both are interdependant on each other....much more than most think. the world is a worse place without britain/america because despite all the critisism there are some evil regimes out there who need to be toppled. to anser you question though, america has a much bigger. expensive armed force, but, britain as a nation is equivalent to real madrid in terms of history and quality. |

British!
Why? Well the Americans have yet to be tried in a really hard fight on their own and when they do they simply lose. Cambodia, Nam, Iraq, Afghan all things done 100% US and the best probably is Korea which was a draw. They have yet to fully and utterly crush an enemy like the European Empires were capable of. instead the Yankees are good at destroying everything visible on the surface and leaving the enemy forces still very much alive underground. |

The US soldiers get a bad rap, I think they are good. The Brits are reputed to be the best, along with the Israelis. Canada had a really good rep in WW2 when the government use to give them decent equipment. |

The United States and the United Kingdom both have an excellent military, and they will never go to war with eachother so whats the point? |

Don't know if there's a better or not. The Brits, Canucks, Aussies, and Kiwis as well as US ALL have fine militaries. I wouldn't wanna fight against any of these allies or the Israelis. It'd be much different than the lopsided victories we (all above) achieve against the enemies we have.
The Kiwis and Aussies lack of political correctness make them more fun to part with and y'all Brits have some screwed up officer philosophies that seems to have made it's way into our Naval forces.
As far as having any of them beside me on the battlefield, I'd fight alongside any of the above in a heartbeat.
(I think all can agree it's the politicians that screw it up for any of us. Some places more than others.) |

for sheer size i would say america, tactically the uk but having served in the british military i believe it would have to be the americans due to the enormous amount of finance and backing they get.
if the british took on board some of their ways such as veteran aftercare and issuing the men with up to date equipment then we would be world beaters again rather than lap dogs. |

I would have to say that British troops are far better their training is better geared to be more disciplined and the American Army are far too gung ho my opinion as we are all entitled to one before you think I am against them. I am not they are in Iraq and i respect that and they are having difficulties as well as the Brits but this site is opinion based. |

To answer this question, one must first identify the mission that each nations armed forces are charged with.
The US has to protect its assets , that are worldwide, and be prepared to support its allies - this requires the ability to project power, which the US does have, particularly in respect of the US Navy, with its Aircraft Carriers, Ticonderoga CGs etc.
The UK works on a smaller scenario - our aim is to defend our islands and, particularly, to provide re-inforcements to weaker NATO allies, such as Norway, until the US, with its greater reach can get to the scene with heavy muscle.
As far as the Army is concerned, the UK and US Armoured forces are about equal - the M1A2 Abrams MBT and the Challenger 2 MBT, although reflecting a different concept of armoured warfare, are both similar. British Infantry training is superb, and revolves around individual training and the ability of infantry to work together cohesively right down to half-squad level. UK Lance- Corporals are probably the equal or better than any other nation.
The Eurofighter is as capable an airplane as any potential enemy can put in the air. Tornado can still put down the bombs. UK, however, cannot afford the luxury of having diferent aircraft types built for specific missions - our planes have to be general purpose, whereas the US can afford (has to afford) mission-specified aircraft - the A10 for anti-armour work, the F16 as a general purpose plane, the F15 as an air superiority fighter and also as a heavy strike plane. The B52 as an area bomber with dumb munitions, or as a launching platform for Tomahawk cruise missiles.
In terms of the sea, the US has ****** up a bit. The British type 22 frigate is probably the best general purpose warship in the world, whereas the US Perry class FFGs are a bit weak. The Knox class of US FFGs has been disposed of to the smaller US allies - Greece, Turkey, Egypt. The Frigate is not a class of ship that the US excels at.
However, the Arleigh Burke DDG is an excellent Destroyer, but yet the US has withdrawn its entire class of Spruance DDGs at mid-life. Turkey has acquired 4 of them, but the rest seem likely to either end up in the service of Greece etc, which is a bit silly, as these ships are only middle aged and have immense potential to be up-armed and to serve for another twenty years. Were I the UK defence Minister, I'd buy 12 of them PDQ, even if they had to sit in mothballs whilst we trained crews to operate them, and put them through our shipyards for refit and modernisation.
The Astute class of submarine look lethal. Probably the best hunter-killer sub in the West. These are UK boats.
Where the UK and US differ relates to the size and economic power of each nation. UK particularly suffers from logistical problems - we need more transport aircraft, more helicopters, more infantry fighting vehicles, if we are to continue our role as a major fighting force against insurgency. However, leaving out SEAS (US), the UK infantry is probably better trained than those of the US, and is able to perform without huge amounts of high-tech gear.
One aspect is very clear. UK forces catering, from the Officers Mess to the field ration pack, is far superior to that of the US. US ration packs, in the last Gulf War, were described officially as MRE-Meals Ready to Eat. The Yank rank and file called them 'Meals Rejected by Ethiopians".
Which is a bit of a put down on Ethiopians - Ethiopian food is very good - I've cooked it. |

Brittish are the best. |

American. More funding and greater number of troops.
The Britsih forces are better trained by a long way but if the UK and the US went to war the US would win through weight of numbers. |
