As an ex British service man, whose had experience alongside the US in Iraq, I would honestly say that we fight amazingly well with the lack of kit we have. The americans just throw money at their army. If we had the amount of money the americans do we'd no doubt be the most powerful country in the world. ~Also the americans are alot less disciplined than us Brits. I found an americans HELMET next to a rifle unloading bay, when I returned it the lad said " thanks I forgot to pick it up", now that says it all!!!! |

What a silly question. They saved us in two world wars and saved Europe from starvation and communism with the Marshall Plan. As for the Americans beating the British in the war of independence they were British too. British settlers. |

You mean that you won't need us to save you again?
And you won't come begging for our help again?
Cool!
You don't sound like a limey. Muslim, perhaps? |

I disagree. Since you aren't providing evidence for your claim, I won't do so either. |

I think there are positive and negatives on both sides. Being an American I of course am partial to our military and feel they are far superior to anyone. I am just expressing the truth as I see it. |

Well I don't know much, but I do know that the American's Beat
them during the Revolutionary War.
I heard a little about the Balkans, nothing sensational.
well, this ignoramous says the British should prove they are better than the Americans by demonstrating their skills if they are allies. |

the americans have the best gear, and the manpower, and some excellent special forces, but everyone knows the SAS are the best in the business at what they do. |

Did the Americans not defeat the British in the American war of independence ? |

I've seen American soldiers in combat first hand, they all want to be hero's, most spout of quotes from films. I think they have the British 'spunk in them somewhere don't they? I distinctly remember a certain American President practically on his knees asking the British to join in Vietnam. That was the only war America has fought on its own, remind me of the lives lost and the eventual outcome? Lest you yanks forget who helped you fight the British Navy in the war of Independence? you didn't have any ships other than the ones you used to bring black slaves from Africa to work on Jefferson's plantation. Yes it was the French who helped you, and why because they saw an excellent opportunity to stick one up the Brits. And who gave you the statue of liberty? The froggies, originally destined for Paris, but they thought they might make friends with the yanks to rub salt in the wounds. The Americans were in fact British settlers and greedy ones at that, can anyone see the comparison to today's America? I rest my case |

There are good and bad American fighters and there are good and bad English fighters.
Are you just trying to stir up an argument on your question?
I'd bet the English are much better at grammar than you are. |

Of course, that would definitely explain it!! Oh, wait I almost forgot about those two pesky world wars. You know the ones where Britain was getting there a@# beat. The Americans kinda saved the British from losing London if I recall, among other places in Europe, and the South Pacific. Oh yeah, and there's that time when some ragged farmers, business men, and others stood up to the British and their King. If I remember correctly they had almost no supplies, training, food, or clothing. Yet somehow they managed to defeat(big time) the British and win their independence. I think it was about 230 years ago. |

I DON'T. I think you had better brush up on American History and The History Of WWII and The History of the
Armed Forces of the United States of America and you'll see whose military is the strongest. |

For those who bought up the Revolutionary War, one word for you - stalemate.
Yep, stalemate, because that's what the declared outcome was. Granted, it was for all intensive purposes a victory for America, but if you count that then you have to count Britain as winning the 1812 war too.
As far as the question goes... how should I know? |

I would disagree on this because of 2 things:
1. most of our gear is made in the US
2. most of our time is spend trying to get dodgy us gear to work. |

I make you right. The British army has a long history with many battle honours. This maybe due to the discipline of its troops and the different tactics employed through the centuries.
When the British army operates abroad as in Iraq they are like the Roman army, they divide to conquer plus they have had good training in Northern Ireland in the last 400 years or so. |

I've served in combat situations as an American, but never alongside the British, so it's hard to compare. All other factors being equal (equipment, unit training, experience, etc) I'd say they are about the same. The problem with comparison is that in the real world, all the other factors are not equal.
Look at the Iraq situation. The Americans are much better equipped, but they are also in charge of the most dangerous areas. There are more cases of American fratricide, but there's also a lot more American troops in Iraq, and they see a lot more action. When there are more potential "friendly fire victims" and more rounds being fired, you'll have more instances of fratricide, regardless of skill.
You also have to consider that the British have a much smaller contingent in Iraq, and fewer security commitments outside of Iraq. As such, they can afford to send their better units to the country. The Americans don't have this luxury. We have to deploy a lot of our inactive reservists and we often have to put support personnel into combat roles. We don't have the luxury of just sending our very best troops. As a result, it makes it seem like the British are better. It's kind of like one country sending their All-Star players to the World Cup, and another having to send a second-string college team because their best players are off doing something else.
If both of our countries had to fight a total war, with all of our troops being used and both of us facing the same responsibilites, I think you'd find that Americans and Brits make equally skilled soldiers. |

Far superior? You could make an argument either way, but to say one is "far superior" is just arrogant. And we know Americans are the "arrogant" ones right? |

The Americans may have the manpower and some amazing weaponry, but when it comes down to professionalism courage and discipline the British military are far superior in fact some senior British officer's don't rate the Americans at all and dread working with them |
