Alexander the Great is by far the greatest military leader of all time. He was able to conquer most of the known world before the age of 20. There were more cities named after him than years he had lived at the time of their inception. His tactics were the basis of all major generals to come after, including Caesar, Hannibal, Charlemagne, Napoleon, Lee, Patton, Hitler...
He lived over 2,000 years ago, and to this day his tactics are discussed in military academies. He was, and still is, the greatest.

He is also noted for possibly having taken part in a plot to assassinate Hitler, for which he was forced to commit suicide before the war's end.

Karl von Clausewitz, an instructor for the military academy in Prussia in the early 19th century, is considered the father of modern military tactics...most of which are still used today. Although he never served in combat and can't by regular definition be called a hero, he can most certainly be called a military leader.

Nelson Mandela gets my vote he was imprisoned for fighting for the ANC served his time such great dignity even the guards came to admire him.When he was released he reached out to all that had commited shocking crimes and turned the other cheek for the advancement of his countrymen(all colours).He is one of the greatest men of our time and our present day leaders could learn a lot from him.He came to realize you achieve more with words than guns.

General Robert E Lee.Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia and later Supreme Commander of all the Confederate Forces.He had limited resources,limited manpower,in fact limited everything yet still managed to campaign successfully in one of the bloodiest Wars in history.
