Anyone of the Medal of Honor recipients.
Or how about the unknown soldiers from each war that gave their lives having never been identified? |

Jeffery S, if you're going to give details about somebody, at least have the courtesy to give the right information. James Stewart "Became corporol or something". Please tell me you are not going to enlist.
Prior to World War II, James Stewart learned to fly and received his private pilot's license in 1935. He enlisted in the Army on March 22, 1941. Though he desired to fly as a combat pilot, he was at first used mostly for publicity. At his own expense, he took additional private flight training so he could qualify for combat. He received his commission after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Early in the war, Jimmy Stewart served as a Bombardier trainer. He was ventually qualified on B-17s and was attached as operations officer with 445th Bomb Group, 703rd squadron. Within a month he was put in command of the squadron. He eventually flew a total of 20 combat missions in WWII. From 1944 to 1945 he served as chief of staff, 2nd Combat Wing, 2nd Division, 8th Air Force.
Military record:
Served overseas 21 months
Flew 20 combat missions
Medals received for WWII service:
Six battle stars
Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters
Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters
Croix de Guerre with Palm
After WWII, Jimmy Stewart continued in the Air Force Reserve. He eventually rose to the rank of Brigadier General.
Medals received for later military career:
Distinguished Service Medal 1968
Presidential Medal of Freedom 1985
Retired 1968 |

it is the one who has just voluntarily enlisted, knowing they could die. Greatness is not always measured by how much damage the 'soldier' has done, but by the gentleness of the heart. semper fi |

Audy Murphy. A very ordinary man, who inspired and led others.
Undeniably prevented from attaining more senior rank than he did! Although decorated more than 20 times and I understand the most highly decorated serving US Soldier of WW11. I believe he was only a captain - and even that was resisted by many.
U don't have to be general to be a great soldier, seaman, airman!

Many have achieved greatness through medals, certificates and rankings. And rightly so. These people should be applauded for their honors. For ME the greatest soldier is that "guy from middle America" who goes and does his duty. He doesn't do anything really spectacular to win medals. He just does his job, watches out for his buddies and keeps us safe. His main goal is to serve his countryto the best of his ability and to come back safe to his family. This is my hero. There are hundreds of these in our armed services. |

If you say 'soldier' does that include leaders and generals? If so then either Washington or Grant. Strangely, though both brilliant generals in their own ways, one made a brilliant president, one a very bad president.
But if you mean just fighting men, then I would nominate Sgt. Alvin York or Smedley Butler.
York single-handedly knocked out 32 machine guns, killed 28 German soldiers and took 132 prisoners in one battle during WWI in France. There was a great movie made about it with Gary Cooper.
Smedley Butler was the highest-decorated soldier in US history when he died in 1940, including TWO Medals of Honor. But after WWI he wrote a book called 'War is a Racket', about how corrupt our government is when it fights wars. It was actually about the Military Industrial Complex, but they didn't call it that, and wouldn't for another few years. |
