Who sees more combat?

lets see here, probable the Airborne( I do have bias there) :D
US Rangers are special ops soldiers and get sent on short missions, Marines are the spear tip that get sent in first
Airborne get the mission of organizing and starting a base operations, Just by the nature of them in itself Airborne has a longer term mission. There are exceptions to every rule but that is the basic tacsop

US Army Rangers see more combat,

and Airborne infantry, and Marines would be about the same.

Airborne and Marine units are usually used as strike and attack units.
so they would be about the same. both do there job well,

but US Army Rangers are in Special Operations, so they go out and do the more larger combat missions with other Spec ops here and there.

Marines are tough, i agree with that.

but they are not always first in.

maybe here and there they are first in, but not always.

Well airborne is a way of getting to the battle field.

On the battle field, airborne is just a light iinfantry unit.

And since no one is jumping in Iraq or afghanistan, airborne is doing the same job all the other infantry units are doing.

And since army deployments are 12 to 15 months, vs 7 months for marines.

Chances are the airborne will see more combat.

Rangers don't do long deployments.

But there is really no way to answer the question.

It would depend on exactly where the marine or airborne brigade was deployed to, on how much combat they would see.

IE: what part of Iraq or afghanistan.

Marines have 7 month deployments then they are back 7 months later, they are not getting the two year dwell time the Army is.

So don't try to say the Army is doing more or getting more combat based on deployment lengths, because that is a bogus way of measurement.

I also disagree that Rangers would get more combat because they are "special ops".

All that means is they are doing more HumInt gathering and small unit ops, not large combat operations at all.

I don't think there is a good answer for this question. It depends where a unit is and what the threat situation is. A unit that has been going hard against insurgents for weeks can see them just melt away and then reappear 50 miles away when they are someone else's problem.

The Marines, first into battle and there is alot more Marines than Army Rangers.
