He was a member of the IRA, and was serving in the Maze prison for his part in several acts terrorism.
He was instructed by his IRA bosses to go on hunger strike, otherwise they would kill his family. So he went on hunger strike and stopped eating.
Eventually he died. As a result, he became a martyr among the republican community.

He was not a freedom fighter. He was a terrorist. Plain and simple.
Not a nice man at all.

he was a cowardly Irish republican terrorist who was sent to HM prison Maze for possession of firearms and in 1981 took part in the IRA hunger strike because he and his fellow criminals seemed to think they were a cut above the rest of the scum in prison and didnt deserve to be treated like the criminals they were. After making demands for such things as the right to wear paramilitary uniforms and the right not to work he and nine other prisoners went on hunger strike in protest, as well as refusing to wear a prison uniform and smearing their faeces up the cell wall. Their demands went unmet by the prison authorities and all nine men died. Ironically, republican propaganda villified the British government for allowing the men to die, yet if they had been force-fed they would probably have decried this action on the grounds of human rights. Similarly, many of the prisoners who had smeared faeces up the walls of their cells were saying what a bloody shame it was that the british government were making them live in this state, yet omitting nobody had forced them to smear their mess up the wall.

bobby sands was ira volunteer who was sent to prison he was involved in protest in h blocks for to be treated as a pow instead of a criminal, after the blanket protest , and 1st hunger wich he felt promises kept, he being o.c. of h blocks decided to do it himself . he died in the hunger srtike with another 9 ira men , when the hunger strike was called off ,northern ireland ,said it was a victory over ira demands but within 4 weeks all the demands were slowly and quietly introduced, it is also worth realising his hunger strike changed the irish struggle,he became an MP , and sinn fein was shown another less bloody way to get to government ,politics , you can be sure he believed in what he died for he lives on in song and murals,, he was a very good poet also hope this helps.

edit :either the questionaire is the troll or there is a lurker probably a prod reporting anybody who thinks he was god which he was. ive been in the **** with no food for 3 days i wonder how long they the poster/troll/lurker could last without food?.

he was a real irish man who would have done any thing for his country and if there were more like him this country would be a better place. Bobby would turn in his grave if he knew what was going on in this country today, his death was not in vain and his name will never be forgotten.
