First, do you understand that the Spartans at Thermopylae were backed up by over 10,000 Athenians?
Second, Thermopylae was all about the advantage of determined defenders fighting in a location that was absolutely PERFECT for the defense. 10,000,000 Romans would have had no better luck fighting their way through that pass due to the topography.
On open ground the 300 Spartans and their Athenian allies would have been slaughtered in about 45 minutes. |

The Roman Republic and Empire had an army for hundreds of years, and it was a more formidable army at some periods than at others. The Romans were far more advanced by the 1st century AD than the Spartans were at the battle of Thermopylae, so I'd say Romans. |

there was actually more than 300 but, what they did with so few numbers were amazing, caesar however was very good with military tactics, so I don't think he would have spent thousands of his mens lives when it was obvious that that attack point was not working |
