The British had King Arthur.
If the US has a legendary warrior, who do you think it is? Who would you consider as America's King Arthur or Leonidas? Or the closest thing we have.

Up until about 40 years ago, I'd say the closest thing America had was Davy Crockett or possibly George Washington ... but the simple fact is that American culture since the 1970s has been decidedly "anti-hero."
Forget that our so-called "enlightened society" equates a warrior's spirit with uncivilized barbarism, is it any wonder that a country founded by kicking out a monarch so enjoys knocking the high-and-mighty off their pedestals far more than elevating them? |

Good question.
A few answers come to mind.
Off the top: Jim Bowie, Sgt.York, Audie Murphy, Randall Shughart and Gary Gordon, and despite what anyone may think about him John McCain did survive years of unimaginable hardships as a POW.
