Why Do Some College Grads Go Enlisted?

Just wondering, I've heard that a good number of college graduates go the enlisted route when they could (possibly) go commissioned instead.
Any ideas behind this reasoning? Thanks.

A college degree does not guarantee leadership abilities or impart to the degree holder the desire to shoulder the very heavy responsibilities of being an officer. Perhaps they merely want to serve without the extra baggage of leadership. Well that's my take any way and I served in the ranks with numerous college grads. Good luck to you |

I opted for the enlisted ranks after college. I grew up on a ranch and was used to working with my hands. I decided the enlisted ranks would be more intrinsically satisfying than being an officer and being involved with the administrative end of things. Along the way I turned down a commission on three separate occasions. Don't regret my decision. |

Why would you assume graduating college means you should become an officer?
A college education only means you qualify to be an officer academic wise and it does not mean you should be one.
Maybe the person isnt officer material, or perhaps they wanted to be enlisted. Believe it or not many people want to do what enlisted do.
I hate to say it but todays generation thinks being an officer is just like being enlisted and they assume anyone can be one. This just is not true. |

XP is giving you totally WRONG information on all counts
* ROTC is not the only commissioning source as implied. There are the service academies, OCS, OIS, and a whole host of other programs for civilian to officer accession.
* Just because you already hold a degree and want to join, doesn't mean you're out of luck to get a commission. There's still OCS. |

*Sighs* EVERY ONE goes in as enlisted, unless they go through ROTC before they even join the military. And since they already have an undergraduate degree, they have no other choice but to go in as enlisted. |

I think all educated ppl. should serve up front with a rifle. I saw many in NG units that pulled rank to escape the field and thats wrong. |
