I know how you feel. I'm the same age as you and my parents were pressuring me for the longest time to join the Navy before I enlisted in the Coast Guard. And for some strange reason I don't think they'll approve... But thats my problem.
Anyway, It's a volunteer army for a reason. You shouldn't feel pressured for choosing not to go into the military. You're also pursuing you're own dreams, by getting a college education. If going to college had actually worked for me, I would have never considered enlisting myself. People need to do what makes them, not others happy. Thats the only way to make a nation prosper, like the US has.
There is always going to be someone who thinks that there is no other way to serve ones country other than to be in the military. When really, just being a good citizen and and example for everyone else is service in itself. Don't listen to them, or to the war hawks that insulted you on this website. We were all given rights and liberties. We people to exercise them just as much as we need people to sacrifice for them. Its a balance, just like life. And it would be a disaster for this country if one side completely outweighed the other. Unfortunately some of the other commenters, who either bashed the service, or bashed you for not being in the military, haven't realized that. |

You didn't go wrong at all. Signing up is made exactly that way for a reason - signing up. It's a volunteering thing, and nobody can make you do it. If other people are mad at you for you doing something you want to do, they're not worth your time to even worry about. |

I feel the same way.my GFs mom thinks i am less capable of taking care of her because I didnt join the service. it doesnt make anyone anyless of a man. I too love my country, but not all of us are meant to join th e service. If its not your calling, then its not your calling. good Luck. |

where are you from, AMERICA? i don't blame you for choosing not to fight, here in australia we don't want to fight and our government still sends troops. tell everyone to pull their bloody heads in and leave you alone. why is a CHAPLAIN condoning war? i'd like to hear what his stance is on israel and the gaza strip before i took any crap from him about MY stance on the war. |

What branch was the Chaplain from? I am quite interested in this.
Send me a side message. Who, what, where, when & why.
1.) We have an ALL VOLUNTEER military. Remind them of that and ask them (co-workers) why they aren't on the yellow footprints at MCRD.
2.) You're productive & not sitting on your posterior taking foodstamps. I have no problem with that.
3.) Sounds like the chaplain needs to get his crewcut out of his posterior. (I'ld like to help in that regard).
added:
4.) You're going to go to school. OUTSTANDING!
5.) Your brother is serving. Isn't that enough - one at a time. There are actually rules about more than one sibling at a time in combat thanks to the O'Sullivans (out of 5 brothers at Pearl Harbor - 1 survived, I believe).
Don't take these guys to seriously. I believe that everyone should serve in one way or another but if you elect not to be in uniform, just remember to support those that are protecting you (sounds like you are). |

There are a certain type of people who think everyone should think the way they think, do what they do, behave the way they think they should behave. And some of these people enjoy putting down others who don't follow their ideals. These are closed minded dictatorial types.
Don't confuse them with rational types and don't be misled into living your life to suit others. You are the master of your life. |

Ask them Why dont they take their little a$$ over there! And walk away!
Any other time I think the wars have meaning, but honestly, this one, does not. Bush is only having our beautiful children killed off for no good damn reason. And I am truely disgusted with this war. I wouldnt go either, not in this time, maybe later when it makes more sense... |

It is your choice and no one elses. Don't listen to anyone who puts you down for not signing up. There are other ways to serve your country and you can do whatever you want. Choose what you want, not what others want. |

not sure why these people are berating you. why are they busting your chops so hard over it. it isn't your calling and who are they to pass judgment.
there are so many ways to support your country and not serve directly in the military, and they need to look at the plank in their eyes and stop bugging you about the sliver of wood in your own eye.
i guess if it continues you may speak to your supervisor about the harassment. because that is what they are doing. |

In some places, people are inevitably going to wonder why a relatively young, fit-looking man isn't volunteering for the military. Some places see higher proportions of men doing military service, have some sort of deep-seated military connection or underlying militaristic attitudes.
Sadly, not much can be done. It's unfortunate, but if someone's crass enough to scold a colleague over a view like that, he's probably been indoctrinated with it too long enough to be reasoned with.
If you don't want to serve for the above reasons, good on you. People should only join the military because they want to, not because they were coerced or 'convinced' by others. |

What a marvelously selfish person you are. Oh my you don't want to miss any weddings or funerals. I notice however you have no problem availing yourself of your rights under the first amendment here on the internet though. Who do you think perserves your right to do this? Hmmm? Why don't you take some time to think about it and honestly answer your own question. |

Well to tell you the truth bud its not a simple thing at all. It is a very hard choice to make. I am unable to join myself. I have a father and many realtives whom are in the military and i am proud of them. You dont have to join to be a good american. We still need our workers of america to continue while our people are at war and fighting for our freedoms. We make america worth comming back home to for our troops. You shouldnt be scolded for this you you should be respected for carring on what needs to be done while are troops protect our freedoms. Good question and i have been in similar situations in my life myself. |

Your NOT! People shouldn't think every single young male should join the armed forces. I served in Force Recon and loved it where others would have hated it, it just isn't for everyone. Take care son and the next time you see someone in uniform go up to them and just say "Thank You!" |

i cant help but think there is something here were not being told. maybe some type of expressed political reason or family military history or whatever. but ASSUMING THATS NOT THE CASE, there is nothing wrong with not fighting. there are other ways to defend this country than being a soldier. im an older individual but i choose to defend my country, for example, by making sure die hard liberals here understand the ridiculousness and danger of cut and run and unilateral surrender. pick the way you know best and are comfortable with to fight for our country and dont make apologies to anyone. good luck and god bless. |

on the comment made by CHESTYPU some of the facts quoted were not right. The sullivans were not at PH but were on a cruiser that was sunk in action at sea.none of them survived, from what is known 4 of them died aboard ship, one did get off but died before rescue. During the rest of WWII brothers were not allowed to serve aboard the same ship but by the time Korea started that was no longer the case.
And it is your choice to serve or not serve |

Get a job, get married raise a family and to hell with what any one think about you singing for the military. If we were not in a war would they think twice about you signing up for the military? I don't think so. So why now? Like I tell my family. I won't fight a war with any of they B*st*rds behind me. If I can't kill them all it isn't a war. I won't let any one tell me who or when to kill someone. |

4 years of college will get you a lot farther in life than 4 years in the military. After 4 years of college you will be making more than those that have spent 4 years in the military and you will have a bright future while after spending 4 years in the military you will have nothing other than psychological and health issues from being deployed and the military will cut off all help for those issues they caused even before you get out of the military.
Just look at their own pay charts, even if you make E5 after 4 years in the military, you are only making around $28,000 a year but the average starting salary for a college grad after 4 years is over $38,000 a year. Engineering majors average $48,000 a year. And that is just starting pay for college grads. |
