Why are so many people opposed to going to the military ??

i cant see why so many people are opposed to going , seeing that they do have a lot to offer and you dont neccessarily have to put you life in danger , money educaton experience etc even though nothing comes easy obviously and you do have to work for it like anything else

I would think it should be obvious to anyone that has served or is serving.

Simply, the general public's perception of the military is so hopelessy warped thanks to the news media, hollywood, and just urban myths in general.

A coworker and I were talking about this the other day. I live in NJ. In NY recently they had a big ticker tape parade for the NY Giants that recently won the super bowl. The Mayor was on TV calling them "heroes."

"Heroes." When was the last time there was a ticker tape parade in NYC for returning soldiers? WWII?

The military is simply not held in the high regard it once was (and still should be). I blame Hollywood, the media, and crumbling patriotism in our own country brought about by "political correctness" and "moral relativism" gone out of control.

because they are ignorant and don't understand what supporting your country means. if youre not goin to support the troops, then feel free to stand in front of them

This country no longer takes pride in doing an honest days work. Hard work scares the daylights out of most people. We are an instant gratification hungry society that wants the easy life NOW. Service in the Military is hard. It is a commitment that most people are unwilling to make. And there is always that possibility of War. But, if one is smart enough, they will never see a front line. There are different divisions that most people don't ever consider when thinking about joining the military. Mechanics and Infantry are going to go to battle or be near a front line. Finance officers DON'T.
Let us not forget we have Flower children who can't for the life of them understand what Horace meant by,"A wise man in times of peace prepares for war." Or Aristotle, "We make war so that we may live in peace." There is also the Latin proverb "Arms keep peace." Our country was founded b/c of our military and it has been protected for over 200 years by our military.
We simply need to raise our children to love and honor the military. We don't need to force them to join, but teach them the respect of it.

Well, a lot of people really don't have what it takes to be in the military. You have to be prepared to risk your life and fight for our freedom. But the military does offer you things that you can't get anywhere, like free education and GI loans, and many skills that you can use in life. After you are in the military, it is almost better to have a military record when applying for a job.

There are two kinds of people in this world:
1.) the "Doers" - those who serve! Try to make things better.
2.) the "talkers" - all they do is tell the doers everything they are doing wrong, they are on for the free ride!
There are a lot more talkers than doers.

Because many Americans love rewards, like freedom, but don't like working too hard for them, especially if it means risking your life for it. As for me, I can't handle a mouse trap, so I know I couldn't kill anyone, but I AM VERY, VERY GRATEFUL FOR THOSE WHO CAN, AND DO! For everyone serving for whatever the reason, HOOOOOORAH!

I don't get that unemployment statement.
You get 10 point preference when applying for a government job and private company employers prefer service men and women.

Regardless of what you may have heard, Military people get a lot of respect.

Anything is scary if you don't know about it. Few soldiers go to war, and when there is a war it takes many, many support personnel to supply them, as well as other honorable careers that aren't 'in harms way'. While you are in the service you get lots
of benefits, and when you're discharged you get lots of veteran perks.

While there have been some reports of Health and medical shortcomings, the overwhelming majority of treatment is superior to what private hospitals give.

Sometimes we run down the current political climate, and it sounds like we are against our country. That isn't so.

We are still, as a nation, very, very proud of our heroes in uniform.

If you join you'll not be sorry. Its an opportunity to see the world.

mainly because of the big deal the media make out of troops getting killed, if you serve in the British army in Iraq you are more likely to get killed by American friendly fire then by terrorists

The thought is oh those poor people and Bush is the next Ghengis Khan. This is spread because of people like Michael Moore (who is the worst, in my opinion) and other far left phsych ward hopefuls

For one thing they have no idea what the military is like. I have made better friends in the military than I ever have in civilian life unless they were also x military. one answered that you will only see two countries now when in fact we have troops in about 20. Chances of getting killed, there were more military killed during our last years of piece than there is now. Over 2000 a year in the 80's compared to less than 1000 in 2004/5/6. You stand more chances of being killed out on the highway than overseas. only about 10 to 15 % of people in the military ever see combat or get put in harms way.

I see nothing wrong with it, but the pay isn't that great and the life allows for only llimited freedom which most don't appreciate. You also get shot at.

People are pansys, they will only "serve" their country when it benefits them or they have no risk involved.

I can understand their reluctance to sacrifice their lives to preserve, protect, and defend the new Iraq Constitution which explicitly makes all laws subject to the higher laws of Islam.

Did you see the news recently ? The suicide rate for soldiers is off the charts as well as the unemployment rate for them after they get out. The other thing is, much as been made about them not getting the proper care they deserve if they get injured. I'm amazed anyone joins the way they get taken advantage off.
