Why are soldier's paid so much?? You have got to be kidding me?? Have you seen a military person's paycheck? Military personnel live at almost poverty level. They are not rich, by no means. What military personnel have is medical benefits that they don't pay for and the housing and separate rations that are tax free.

What I don't understand is WHY you wouldn't want to pay our Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen, and Coastguardsmen better for what they do?? They put their life on the line everyday so you can sit at home and feel safe and are able to type on the internet in peace and post such comments.

You may be wealthy but you are obviously a very poor person not rich in my book. That system you speak of would be the most illegal and disgusting institution that would ever be created. The less fortunate go off and die so the wealthy can live in peace and enjoy their rights. That is sickening and a travesty to the ideals this land was founded upon.

EXCUSE ME. The military is paid a lot? That's news to me. My husband is an E-4. We hardly make $35,000 per year, and that's because we live off base. If we lived on base, we would be making $24,000 per year AT THE MOST. Seeing as my husband works two days on, two days off, and every other Friday-Sunday he works 96-120 PER WEEK. If you break that down he makes only $4.34 PER HOUR. So let me ask you, would you work for that much?!?! Even worse, if we lived on base he would only make $2.97 PER HOUR. Now, we may have our health care paid for, but you have NO CLUE how hard it is to get appointments.

As for deployments, sure, he can make up to $40,000 10 month deployment... but again... my husband is Infantry. He is only back at camp 4 TIMES IF HE'S LUCKY durring deployment in Iraq. This means he sleeps on the ground, does up to 20 hour patrols, only gets a shower every other month, and eats only MREs. Dispite that they do not patrol 24/7 the have to ALWAYS BE READY. So, again... that's only making $5.95 PER HOUR and they are 7,000 miles away from their family and GETTING SHOT AT, SEEING THEIR FRIENDS BLOWN UP, AND PRAYING TO BE ABLE TO GET A CHANCE TO WRITE OR CALL THEIR FAMILY TO TELL THEM THEY ARE OK.

And you're going to call them LAZY?!?!? My husband gets up EVERY MORNING and works his *** off. He PTs, he goes on training missions, he prepares, he protects. Within a week he will be going to CAX to prepare for war again... he'll be awa for a month. Then he gets leave, and then he goes to Iraq again. And you know what? He just came back in September 2006. He's been training SINCE HE GOT BACK. This is his THIRD TOUR in THREE YEARS.

You're just plain ignorant. The men and women in the military serve because it's what they love, and they have PRIDE in their country. They serve to PROTECT YOUR FREEDOM, and do it thanklessly, with VERY LITTLE PAY. You know NOTHING about what it is like for military families. We DO NOT get paid for the more children we have. We DO NOT get that many perks. Wives DO have to work two jobs sometimes just to try to have a future after the military. Grow up and realize that I didnt marry for money, I MARRIED FOR LOVE.

Ok, click on the profile of the person who posted this question and look at "her" other questions. This is probably a scam to try to get email addresses or a study for Sociology or Psych class (maybe working on a PhD). I did some internet studies when I got my one degree. Just trying to see what she can stir up.

Anyway, as a Soldier with over 20 years service, this is a BS statement. I will not go into the military pay vs civilian pay but briefly, research it if you like but some jobs are paid better than their civilian counterparts and some worse. However, none of the civilian jobs involve 15 month deployments where you are not allowed to quit (or go to prison). Also, military healthcare is not that great compared to the civilian sector but it is adequate (look at the Walter Reed articles for example) and family member medical coverage is very challenging at times.

Now, if the writer is legitimate and feels this strongly about her statement, she is more than welcome to come and do a personal interview, in person, with me and my Soldiers. Please apply now for your passport and Visa for Iraq.

I only wrote this for the benefit of the people reading this. Soldiers are dying every day in the war. Soldiers do not question the politics of why we are there and what the president should do. We do our duty as the American people see fit and trust their judgment. We do our best to protect every American whether conservative or liberal, rich or poor without regard to race or religion and preserve everyone's freedoms. The fact that someone wrote the question is a testament to why we serve: to preserve the Freedoms of all Americans. Soldiers do not ask for a "thank you" but only want to be remembered. It makes us feel a little better knowing that the American people are behind us (if not the politics). All I ask is that when you lie down to go to sleep tonight; you give a thought to the many Soldiers in harms way, lonely to come home to their loved ones but doing their duty.

As a soldier, we do not make alot of money. Remember we live in a country where freedoms to do as you wish are provided. We all have choices, and as individuals, just like your choice to marry a rich man. Kudos to you, but what about teaching your kids a skill to be proud of.

Furthermore, as the high cost of a college education continues to rise, more people may use the military as a way to fund their careers to be rich one day.

I may have misunderstood what you were trying to say. Are you saying that the soldiers, who are fighting for YOUR freedom, so that you and your husband can STAY RICH, are supposed to be paid LESS??? Is this a joke??? It HAS to be!
These soldiers, which include men and women, did not CHOOSE to fight this war! They were sent there! They are doing their jobs!!! They have loved ones, and they have families to support. And I am ALMOST POSITIVE they'd rather be in some cushy office job making 6 or more figures! They chose the military in the off chance they may be fighting for the freedom of nitwits including YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who do you think you are! These soldiers are not lazy good for nothing people. I spent 2 years deployed to Iraq leaving behind my 3 children and wife. Before i joined the army in Oct. 2001 to fight the people who caused a International Catastrophe, I owned my own company making close to 4 million a year. What has your husband done for this country of ours besides marry someone like you, Gold Digger!!!! If it wasn't for all those brave soldiers who are risking their lives everyday over there we all would have no rights, and we would be under Britain's rule. Also, soldiers do not make alot of money, a private in the army make close to 1700 dollars a month. Next time do some research.

Soldiers are paid a lot because their job is very high risk - a soldier is expected to die.

You don't want a draft in any form, if it can be avoided. You want soldiers that are motivated to be soldiers, not soldiers that are forced into it. Compulsory services makes for inferior soldiers.

And i think its a good thing that we encourage women to not marry rich men. Equality in society is a good thing! Women should get rich too.

Moreover, part of the package of joining the military is that they pay for your college education...if you survive. And while it pays a lot, it doesn't pay nearly enough to make a man very wealthy.

I don't know of any nice way to say this, so I'll just be blunt - after all, I'm a "stupid" soldier who needs to "go to college" and "get a real job" - YOU ARE AN IDIOT.

First and foremost, you obviously have no idea whatsoever how much soldiers earn. I must've missed the point at which we've started to get "paid so much" because, well, I just don't see it. You'd think if I got "paid so much", I'd be in a big mansion with a 50" flat screen TV and a Ferrari in my garage. Yet, amazingly, I'm in a ground floor apartment and drive a Ford Escape.

Secondly, you have no clue about the education of our armed forces. How many soldiers do you actually know? What degrees do they have? I know a lot of people in the military who are going / have gone to college, and I know people who have anything from a Bachelor's to a PhD who are serving in the armed forces. They have degrees. They have real jobs.

What constitutes a "real job" to you, anyway? Do you know how many different jobs there are in the military? Soldiers aren't just a bunch of idiots running around with rifles. There are soldiers who are network administrators, satellite controllers, operating room technicians, doctors, lawyers, and even historians. Yup, all of those jobs are found in the military.

But hey, one good thing came out of your post. By making such stupid statements you've shown people that even those who marry rich and are taken care of aren't necessary the brightest and best of their generation. In your case, quite the opposite.

I think you need to research your statements before you open your mouth again in the military area. We are a proud group of friends/family and stand to fight for one and all. You are sadly mistaken for thinking that the wage should be lowered for our men and women willing to risk life and limb and be separated from their families for months/years on end!

wow, I don't know which soldiers get paid too much, but I know as an E-4 working in an electronics field I get paid about 30,000 a year, 40,000 when I get deployed, to do what in the civlian world would pay about 60k-80k a year. But I guess it is too much. As a married E-4 with one child, my family qualifies for food stamps and welfare, as well as WIC and plenty of other government benifits, but we are over paid. Go snuggle up to your paycheck(husband) and act like the arm candy you must be, cuz u aren't good for much else.

Military pay is so low that they actually have a WIC office on the military installation where we live. Most servicemembers qualify for WIC, and many also qualify for food stamps and welfare.

Soldiers are anything but lazy which is why the civillian sector chomps at the bit to get them as employees. Soldiers are trained to be hard-working, self-starting, motivated thinkers.

Most of our soldiers are in the service because they are failures in our society at home and couldnt hold down a real job at walmart or taco bell....and were/are constantly getting into trouble at home so they join the service by the instruction of their parents just to get them out of their hair in hopes that they straighten out their lives and learn to do right.

I do not understand why they say that the wars are expensive though.. if the soldiers are getting paid nearly the same how come they say that the war is costing billions of dollars?? Also i do not know why soldiers are paid more while deployed. A taxi driver puts his life at risk every night and yet he doesnt get paid more when he has to drive into the city. a clerk at a gas station does not get paid more than a clerk at kmart? gas station and taxi jobs are the most dangerous jobs there is.. so why pay soldiers more when deployed. This is not the 60's either...soldiers choose to join the service they arent forced to do so like our fathers and grandfathers. Most of the wars that we have been in are not for our safety or the well being of our country they are for thr=e rich wanting to steal from other countries what is not ours and also us sticking our noses where it does not belong.

Soldiers are paid with nickels and dimes to risk their lives protecting the country that we love and we do so with honor and pride. All that SOLDIERS do, is so that people like you can sit back on your leather couch, soaking up Air Conditioning, watch soap opera’s on your big screen, pay other people to raise your kids and criticize soldiers. WE allow you to do all that in the safety and comfort of your own home, SOLDIERS do, not your husbands precious money.
