Why are soldiers celebrated?

They patrol the streets, searching for insurgents and terrorists.

They wear their heavy gear, not daring to take off their helmet to wipe their brow.

You go out to lunch, and complain because the restaurant got your order wrong.

They may not get to eat today.

Listen up woman! Who's is going to protect your freedom? You know that the internet isn't allowed in some countries, free speech, free media, practice of religion......... Try living in a country that is not a democracy, such as many third world nations. That is were you will find the soldiers that are the "killers" you speak of. They are sent by their corrupt government to villages full of men, women and young children to murder anyone who tries to stand up against them. The men are beheaded in front of their families and the boys are pressed into the military. Not only are they killers, they are rapist, violating women and children. They do this right in front of their families. Have you ever looked in the eyes of a five year old after she has been raped repeatedly and left for dead? I have. I held her in my arms as she looks up to me as if she were asking ,"Why me? What did I do wrong?" Thank God she survived because of me and my fellow soldiers. This all happened in Laos, 1972.
The soldiers and veterans we celebrate are the defenders of those men, women and children. And I am proud to say I am one of the veterans. And I will always defend your right to be free.

It's been said there are sheep and there are wolves. I would add soldiers are the sheep dogs. The wolves fear us - and rightly so. We, the sheepdogs, understand if we make you, the sheep, nervous. It is difficult for a sheep to tell the difference between a sheep dog and a wolf - both have fangs and claws, and both are deadly.

There's nothing wrong with being a sheep. Be a good sheep and invent something that benefits all of us, or just be kind to others and enjoy your freedom with a BBQ or a movie or however you choose. Us sheepdogs are keeping the wolves at bay so you can. If you choose to be a dumb sheep that's OK with us too. It's YOUR freedom to use or abuse as you wish.

But know this: freedom is not free. There is a price to be paid in this wolf invested world. We, the sheep dogs, willingly pay the price of your freedom so you don't have to.

No matter how many sacrifices we make, there is the possibility that one day the wolf might slip past us again (as they did on 9/11). When the wolf is more than a TV image to you - when you feel the fangs of the wolf raking your neck - on that day you will scream for a sheep dog. And we will try to save you.

Sleep comfortably in luxury unmatched anywhere on Earth. The sheepdogs are guarding you well. This is obvious because your question shows you've never seen a wolf.

you watch the media and perhaps see killers. the law of armed conflict is very strict.Soldiers have an Immense amount of discipline and an unlawful killing is extremely serious.

they're celebrated because the youth will come complacent and forget the sufferings of their fathers generation for their current freedoms.

marines, soldiers, sailors and airmen alike have died over the years just so you can post such an ignorant question. while you sit down in a comfy bed, in a good house talking about whatever, there are people overseas getting shot at and dying. so while you sit around with your computer, just think, that "killer" gave you another day of freedom. think about that before you post such a stupid question. someone died just so that you can trash them.

Yes we're killers.

My father killed in WW2 to protect and free people from tyranny.

I killed in N. Ireland and the Falklands and my son has killed in Iraq and Afghanistan for the same reason.

We do this so that people like you, your parents and possibly even your grandparents can live safely without fear of oppression.

We do not "celebrate" soldiers. We remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and give thanks that such men exist to protect our rights against all comers.

If an enemy ever invades this country who do you think is going to do the dying to protect you , God i think not he has a habit of turning a blind eye when injustice is being perpetrated, Perhaps if it happens you will be complaining about your soldiers being killers when they kill the enemy who are hell bent on killing you and yours . And here's an extra little tidbit from Elie Wiesel, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, and survivor of the Holocaust about why we get involved:
