Because it's part of the United Kingdom, it is a democracy and the people of Ulster have voted to remain part of the UK.
It has nothing to do with religion and as long as it remains a democracy there is no question of "getting it back". |

Ulster is still British Territory whether you like it or not and is actually more Protestant than Catholic.
The people of Ulster don't want to belong to the Irish Republic as several referendums have shown.
So basically the answer to your question is, the British are in Ulster because they are British! |

You may want it back, but then you will have to change the Constitution of the Republic because a few years ago they had a referendum to change this and remove the clause which claimed Ulster was part of the Republic.

The British are in ulster to look after the British citizens which Northern Irish people happen to be. It is short sighted to think that the majorty of Northern Irish wish Britain to leave.
If Northern Ireland wanted to be independant or part of the Republic of Ireland then all they have to do is secceed from the UK but seeing as they have not done so it seems to me that they are reasonably content with the current relationship with the rest of Great Britain.
Ask your self this, in the last 10 years who has commited more acts of mindless violence to civilians the British government / British Army or the IRA and its splinter groups.
I happened to be in Manchester during the 1996 bombing and it was not my best memory especially since I was a kid back then.
Why would the Northern Irish really want to join the rest of ireland with its terrorist history especially now with violence on the increase and IRA members killing soldiers for no valid reason. |

well the premise of your argument is extremely flawed as two great republican heroes were actually Protestant, Wolfe Tone and Parnell, those two names ring any bells? Secondly if the British left the Catholic church years ago, what about Scots English & Welsh Catholics? Granted they aren't the largest faith on the mainland but they still exist.

You are living in the past. The reasons why the north of Ireland pop have remained British is because they voted to stay British in a referendum. It's a democracy and you cannot force people; it's been tried and does not work and leads instead to long-term resentment, hatred and mistrust.
Yes and here in London you can be anything you like, including a Catholic. I frankly don't give a toss what religion people have or follow, it's their business.
As for myself I'm a Christian and I believe in the Holy Roman Church, but I'm a Protestant. I also believe that Jesus Christ is the head of the Christian Church, here on Earth and in Heaven and for everlasting time.
I'm also opposed to abortion and lots of things which Catholics also believe in and support. But, for my sins I remain a born again Heretic. Nothing I can do about it. Blame Henry VIII who was born a Catholic and who died a Catholic but who made the creation of a Protestant England a possibility.
His daugher, Elizabeth I, while a Protestant, was not particularly anti-Catholic and indeed employed many Catholics at court including an entire choir who sang Catholic hymns etc [the psalms in Latin].
In spite of what you may have heard, England is a Catholic country in all but name.

The PEOPLE of Northern Ireland have had referendums to stay a part of Britain and the PEOPLE of the Republic voted that they didn't want the North to be part of the Republic. |

Y'see I always thought it belonged to the "people" of Ireland and not actually any religious faith. As crossfire has already pointed out two leading republican figures Theobald Wolfe Tone and Charles Stewart Parnell were both Protestants.

I think that you will find that in 1916 when the 6 counties of Northern Ireland asked to keep their links with the UK, that only one third of the population was Roman Catholic. This has increased to about on half now, and in at least two of the counties it may be a substantial majority.
The reason for this is the same as we are having an explosion in England's Muslim population today, the religious leaders see a way forward to change the indigenous structure of the land.
The several injustices of employment and housing when combined with the history of where the majority Protestant Northern Ireland population came from was latched onto by terrorist groups to gain support for the activities which are not solely aimed at bringing Northern Ireland under their control, but eventually the whole of Ireland.
To show that I have no bias on the 2 religions I would end by saying that if my English Protestant Church doesn't pull its socks up and listen to the Archbishop of York, I may soon be doing a Tony Blair religious move. |

Its slightly ironic about some people in Ulster, Scotland and Wales talking of Independence, when the first thing most of them will do with independence is throw themselves head-long into the pursuit of a federal European state.
I would have hoped by the 21st Century we could have got past dividing the borders of Europe along religious backgrounds and just go with what the people wanted. As far as I can tell the majority in Ulster still want to remain part of the UK.
Additionally, I thought the Republic of Ireland had acknowledged many years ago that it couldn't afford the cost of running Ulster. That's before it got into its current mess and had to start slashing public spending and putting up taxes.
The troubles have meant that Northern Ireland has much higher policing costs than anywhere else. Since no one with more than half a brain cell was willing to risk a penny in investment during the troubles, it also has a significant problem with under-investment in business and infrastructure. If I remember correctly unemployment is so high it isn't counted in the official UK figures. |
