Military cannot provide them a reasonable standard of a right to personal privacy in that environment.
They'd need to redesign most subs to accomodate private female heads (latrines), bathing, changing, and sleeping quarters. |

When on board a sub, a guy gets out of his rack, another jumps in to it. I don't know many men whom are willing to share his bed with another man? Do you know any women whom would share their bed with an unknown man? There's not enough room for a female berthing compartment on a sub. |

If you are asking why women in the US Navy cannot serve aboard submarines, the reason is for practicality purposes.
Even though submarines are much larger than previous versions, such as those used in WWII, it would still be difficult to reconfigure a submarine to accomodate separate sleeping, bathing, and restroom facilities for women. |

I served on Submarines for many years, possible from the same base as Caesars wife worked in, I have never heard about women on board a boat being bad luck. However, all navy's have different superstitions eg. it is bad luck on French boats to have rabbit for a meal on board as the French Sub Minerva went down in the Med. after a rabbit dish for dinner.
I saw women on subs but only day trips as passengers. The senior rates mess on our sub was about 4 metres X 1 between the bunks the officers mes was smaller and the junior rates was a bit bigger. No place for separate changing etc.
To Caesars wife, if I'm correct and you were at Drom and you have the subs 25th birthday book you can look up my badge number,it is 111. I was the original crew for JvdM.
Of course something could have happened to make this service change their superstitions since my days. after all I was on submarines 30 years ago. |

Because they don't have the money or the room to make separate shower/latrine facilities on subs. for men and women. |

On ships there is room to give woman there own sleeping and bathing areas on subs there is no such space available in fact some guys hot rack it. That is when one guy sleeps in the same bed as another guy who is on duty. The bathing arrangements are equally sparse. This was tested in ballistic missile boats and was found to be unworkable. There just isn't enough privacy on a sub. |

I have been on a submarine, but just for a look around. One woman I knew did go out and the crew almost mutinied. They had to turn the boat around and bring her back. Apparently it's very bad luck.
I used to work for a submarine base.
Yes you're right. I don't have the birthday book. But that did happen because I know the woman who had to be brought back. I can't remember the name of the boat, though. |

Caesars wife is right, it has always been in the history of boats and sailing that it is bad luck to have a woman with a bunch of men at sea, drama WILL happen and the work won't get done, costing the government more money |

The issue is space. There is not enough room on a submarine to separate female living areas from male living areas. |

All the reasons above are valid. And true.

Most submarine missions are secretive in nature .. Most women don't "keep a secret". |

Biological differences between men and women i.e. may effect their internal organs for producing off spring. British government policy. However in the future this will probably change just like everything has over the last 20 years so if you want to be a submariner you will just have to wait. By the way they are not allowed to be clearance divers either for the same reason!
Try this walk into a cupboard and close the door turn on your torch and get yourself comfy eat sleep wash clean and work in that environment for three months. that's what it is like on a submarine.
Good Luck! |

At one time the Swedish Navy had two female Submarine skippers. Their subs mission is patrolling their shores so they aren't out for more than a few days at a time. Our subs are on patrol for as long as 6 months so heads(restrooms) and berths become a real problem. |

One or two women cooped up with several hundred men for months on end. Not a good mix.
They need to have more interest among the women, then they could maybe mix them 50/50. |
