A lot of times Companies like Maersk are contracted by a section of the military call the Military Sealift Command. The Army loads them and Guards them. They ride with the gear over to wherever it goes and make sure "Pirates" (I'd rather call them Terrorists) don't get too Froggy.
Now, manning the ship with private contractors. Black Water doesn't have a whole lot to do since it was kicked out of Iraq. Theres a great job for them.
The only legal issue is that once they pull into to some international ports guns cannot be displayed (mounted).
Either pay a mercenary company a few hundred thousand or pay these retarded skinnys millions. |

Which country would supply the Soldiers?
A lot of the ships fly flags of convenience, like Panama and Togo. The crew can be from all over the world, and the owner company can be any number of nationalities. Which country would take responsibility for a ship with this sort of pedigree?
In reality it's down to the Shipping company to provide Private security on board their vessels but this is more expensive than the insurance premium so they don't bother. If the ship is taken the insurance pays out. If it gets through safe then they didn't need security in the first place. |

Actually, all the posters have some truths; the sheer logistics of who owns the ships, the ships cargo, the nationalities of the crews (which change all the time), the countries and ports where the ships go to also have their rules for and against ammo being on board, etc.
While some shipping companies will have their own security aboard their ships, their shipping runs are pretty limited to ports where there would not be a problem with having armed personnel on board. |

They can if they want to pay for it... mercenaries are very expensive, and the military forces of the world can't afford to have troops work on every ship that passes through that area. |
