Why can't you look at the drill sgt in basic training?

Some of them wanted me to look at them when you talked to them. Others wanted me to look forward. Whatever they needed, but its just a part of breaking down egos for other purposes (ie. teamwork, humility, etc..)

That's called "gazing". It shows a lack of discipline. The only time you can look at someone is when they're talking to you and they have given you express permission to do so.

In the position of attention, (the most common possition you stand in in the military) you stand with your head and eyes straight to the front no matter who is talking or passing by. If you are looking in the d.i.'s face, chances are you are in the wrong positon, and out of ranks. but when given the command to "stand at ease," you look at the person that is giving you instructions until they walk out of your view....such as to your side or back. When they are out of view, you face front again until they are within view again. When being directly addressed by any ranking seargent in active army, you go to parade rest....which is just like "attention" except you lock your hands behind your back instead of to the sides.

You must maintain military bearing meaning no movement or talking. It is for discipline.

Becuase drill sargents are on power trips, just like cops.

The idea is to gain "military bearing." A good Instructor will seize on any opportunity to make you feel stressed out. You really aren't supposed to be scared or brave... you need to be still.

If you look him in the eye then you are no longer standing at attention. Anyone who goes through Military Training without having a good instructor who tears them down to the point they worry they might not have what it takes is being cheated.

Another important part of Military Training is building you back up again. IE you will succeed in Physical Training, Have an opportunity to lead, compete in Drill. Unless you are really unlucky you'll learn the real value of teamwork, and come out of Training feeling confident and battle ready.

they just don't want you to look around while you are at the position of attention. Your head and eyes should be straight ahead. It is paying attention to detail and showing discipline to not move around.

The basic lesson of basic training is to get one to immediately follow orders even if they don't know the reasons for the order. The service doesn't really care if you know how to make hospital corners on your bed, or if you can memorize the serial number of your weapon or if you remember to look straight ahead. Instead, those are exercises in following orders so that one day if you get an order to do something that appears stupid, you will follow that order without demanding to know how your stupid order fits into the overall scheme or plan that might involve tens of thousands of individual soldiers.

To a drill Sargent, respect is the issue. If you look at him or her, it is showing disrespect, and tyranny. You are too look down at all times. It is the way you will treat your prisoners when you have them. If they are looking at you, it is an issue of trying to size you up, and attack.
