Why did America cowardly avoid WW1 & WW2 untill they were half over ?

Just wondering because we hear so much crap from Americans that "they" won WW1 & WW2, BUT the reality was that they did all they could to avoid being involved, cowardly not commiting to the Allied effort and come in ONLY when directly attacked at Pearl Harbour, when other countries had already been committed and fighting abroad for 3-4 years.

cowardly? I don't think that was the reason and besides the second world war rested on the outcome of Operation Barbarossa.

The US was very isolationist did not want to be involved in European affairs until it was attacked. Just because there is a war going on doesn't mean everybody has to join in.

UN didn't exist till after WW2, it wasn't our job to go and fight other peoples war - had no legitimate reason to
and we needed a reason to convince the American people that war was in order..

Just me two scence, but you obviously don't understand Americans all that well. The simple fact is that unlike Europe, the average American does not care about international politics. That is the main reason we have and will agian persure American interest wherever they may take us.

Because, we don't see things as being our problems until they directly affect us. We don't care about others' problems, but the second that we get attacked, then it is our problem.

You need to make up your bloody mind Wayne. In one of your questions, you stated that we start wars and then need the English and Australians to bail us out, and criticize our military for being somewhere they don't belong, but then you ask why we waited to get involved in another war until we were attacked. Do you want America to be the protector of a free world and get involved anywhere there is injustice, or do you want us to sit back and allow govenments such as the one in Iraq to exist? I'm sorry, but you can not expect anyone to take your opinions seriously if you are going to contradict yourself. You also have asked if the Americans should give an aircraft carrier to the Aussies to patrol the south Pacific. Being that you, as an Aussie, seem to despise my country when we do attempt to protect peoples rights, why should I care about the safety of your country?
I'll be honest with you - I despise the fact that American soldiers are dying every day in what I feel is an incredibly useless and unwinnable war. I personaaly wish that our government would simply solve the problems we have here within our own borders. And if that means that one of our "friends" ,including Great Britain or Australia, has to protect their own damn selves for a while, so be it.
So make up your mind - should we protect the rest of the world? Should we simply stay out of anything that doesn't directly affect us? Or should we help only certain "types" of people, such as you?

Because there was a lot of support for Germany by the american people in both wars so the government had to be careful not to upset their voters.
In the 1940s one third of american people had german ancestry.

f0876and1_2
because we didn't want to be involved in what were initially petty european wars. we only decided to step in when the wars started directly affecting us... oh and yeah, without the arrival of American support, the Allies would have been beaten both times, although it surely didn't and couldn't have done the job alone without allied help. sorry next time we'll just let europe destroy itself instead of bothering to help

VInZent
they did not want to waste money on military goods and it is pitiful the act of war. they did not want loss of life of the people in thier nation. BTW dont ask this question. it is rude
hope i helped

OK, WW1, we had no reason to take sides until the Germans started sinking our merchant ships and then the Lusitania in 1916. Then when American troops did enter, they accomplished more from May to November of 1918 than the other allies accomplished in over three years. The American troops won the war.
Same thing in 1939, why did the allies wait until Poland was invaded, why did they let Hitler attack Czechoslovakia? Had they gone to war then, Hitler wouldn't have had such a strong Military. Once again, the Europeans let things get out of hand and we had to come out of our peaceful isolation and bail them out. Besides, had we sent our forces to France in 1940, under British and French leadership, our troops would have been left on the beach at Dunkirk.

Well now we are out of our isolation, I hope everyone is happy, no one has a reason to complain.

'We didn't "cowardly" avoid anything. We weren't AT war. You think that we are obligated to be at war simply because Britain was at war? Did you see us get involved in the Falklands simply because Britain was going to war?

When we entered the war, we threw our resources into the war. But in fact, both times you mention we were lending Britain military support long before we went to war. I wonder what your enemies thought about us helping you when we weren't at war ourselves?

This insane idea that America should have been there and helping Britain out of their mess sooner than we did sounds to me like you are an inferior nation who needs help. Is that why you think we should have come to your aid sooner? If so, then we have the right to claim we won because you are saying you needed our help sooner or you couldn't win at all.

We came when we did. You fought. We fought. The world turned out better because of everyone's effort. It is now history. Get over it and quit your bellyaching.

g-day!

America doesn't have to be your savior. You complain when we do to much to help the world. Then you complain when we don't world police fast enough. I think we should have let Germany win. :)

It's because it wasn't America's fight to be fought. You're correct that the Americans didn't want to get involved, but only because it didn't concern them. After a while, America stepped in to help, but, probably because they realized the war could affect them.

jeeper_peeper321
Hmmmmmmmmm, WW ll was half over when America entered the war ?

Just exactly which half was over with ??

I seem to remember, that Germany controlled ALL of Europe, most of north africa and parts of the middle east.

At the time America entered the war.

Seems to me, the allies were doing a great job of losing, untill America entered the war.

Only then, was Germany rolled back and its army defeated.

Try looking at it this way, pal....even *with* America in WWII there were a few times when it could easily have gone to the bad guys. Now, Mr. Hate America, just what do you think the outcome would have been without us to bail you out?

Way back then, America had a policy not to get involved in foreign affairs. I don't even think we traded very much with other countries at that time. There's a name for the policy, I can't think of it but I know as soon as I submit this I'll remember it. Anyways, after the WWII America decided not to be so self-contained and it was only after that when we started branching out. Looking back now it seems cowardly, but at the time I think the mentality was that we were 'minding our own business,' much like people would like us to do today.

Because we didn't want to get involved in a European conflict. And we were providing lend lease to the Allies long before we entered the war.

well,..its a matter of politics and human nature. politically we were trying to stay nuetral in hopes of avoiding any conflict which might disrupt "american harmony" and on the nature side we were waiting to see who truly was the enemy and who we could quickly defeat when and if the need arose. we stood quietly by as atrocities were committed in both wars until we as a nation was directly confronted. but note; in BOTH conflicts when our integrity was challenged we answered the call and fought with valor. and as the numbers show, we lost as many if not more people in both conflicts as our allied friends proving that although we did not start it, we were sure to finish it.

The reason why the war was half over is because America ended the war by one making japan surrender after dropping the two atomic bombs and killing over a million japanese citizens. The war wouldve ended up alot different if America never joined or joined right away. Also America had no reason to go into the war until pearl Harbor was attacked by japan, America was staying neutral until then.

bettsy1989
How can America claim they won the war?? How can any single country claim they won the war? yea all countries had some good wins, they all had some good losses, in the end it came down 2 all the allies pulling together and being united, we finally got some good leadership and practiced techniques that were new and often un tested. the introduction of america also ment the introduction of tanks, yea at the start they didnt help, some may even say they hindered succsess but in the end we all got it right and pushed the kaiser back into germany. I find it funny that alot of the yanks on this page claim that during the world wars they didnt want 2 get involved in 'other peoples conflicts' and now they are very out there and may even appear trigger happy. Australia how ever has always been there, not because we are inferior and need 2 feel wanted but because it was the right thing, we have always helped our fellow allies and hope that in turn if we ever need help that you will jump in just as soon as we did.

Ry22
Ummmmm because we changed the tide of both wars! We may not have won these wars ourself, but without us, more lives would have been lost and the results would be different. Please do not insult my country.
