To defend against the "Communists" achieving world domination. |

The failure of the French at Dien Bien Phue had little to do with the American involvement in Vietnam!
The U.S were scared of communist dominoe effect, including the Australians, my brother fought there in the OZ army.
Trying not to sound too anti U.S! I fear that they were worried about a possible take over of the region by the communists.
A disastrous mistake. 55,000 dead U.S soldiers! For what?
When will we ever learn?
I'm a Brit, but what the U.S administration did was terrible. Not only for the Vietnamese but for those fallen soldiers! |

1st: to prevent the development of Communism
2nd: to get a potential market ("back-yard") as the one in Mexico
3rd: resources |

Same reason we fought in Korea...The Domino Effect. We thought that if one country fell to communism all those around it would as well.
Vietnam was French Indo-China at the beginning of the conflict. We stepped in to stop Communism and help France. |

you must be the most naive around, person i served in Vietnam and it was like all the other wars since WW2 money, money, money and more money , because if we were doing it to help the South Vietnam people to get a better life dont you think we would be in Africa right now with all the suffering being inflicted on the people// Face it this is a money hungry country// We have people in my area of the country that have been caught in all kind of crime and they are still walking the streets because of money// If you have enough money you can be president and get more than you can spend and it dont matter whose life you destroy/// Wake up and smell the onions/// The love of $$$$$$$ is the ROOT of ALL EVIL and that includes wars//// We are going down the tubes in Iraq inspite of the cruel sADAM hUSSSIEN the way he was running the country may have been the only way he could keep the system peaceful as it was///Besides that wasn't he our "buddy" as long as he was fighting Iran what a crock no weapons of mass destruction and approx 3,000 American live ( equalivent world trade centers) countless of dead and disabled American and Iraq's/ All the time we are say in the name of demoracy and still no bIN lADEN // and we were advised by leaders in military and C I A not to do this as well as british intelligence, but no OLE HIGH POCKETTS bUSH wouldn't listen and look at the mess.I'm just the son of a share cropper and didn't have to go to hARVARD to figure that out and i voted for the dip s h i t /// |

The popular reason is to suprepress communism from spreading throughout Southeast Asia. The real reason is we got drawn in to clean up France's fvck up.. |

To stem the tide of communism, the theory was that if we didn't stop communism in Korea and Vietnam, pretty soon Communist revolutions would be happening in Mexico and Canada. |

To prevent the communists from committing genocide. Unfortunately, traitors among our own people were successful in getting us to leave for political reasons even though we were crushing them militarily.
That genocide did happen BTW. Millions of innocent people were killed for no real reason whatsoevre beyond using terror to foster obedience. It's instructive how all the people who were involved in the peace movement, worked very hard to make sure the US didn't intervene as it was happening. And guess who was the number one player in that bit of heinous evil? Why none other than John Kerry.
Liberals are about genocide....and alway have been. |

We had an obligation to South Vietnam which we created in order to fight Communism. We wanted bases there, we got them, and so we were obligated to protect them. |

The Domino theory was that communist activities would 'spill over' from one country to the next, therefore the US administration believed that by containing communist activity in one country it would prevent communist expansion. |

Money, we figured if we could show Russia that we could destroy their weapons they would back off, leaving us the big dog and save us money on weapon systems |

because the us government were anti-communism at that time (and still are to a lesser degree) the next largest power to them at that time was the ussr and after that china , both of which were communist states so when pol pot took over vietnam aided by china in a military junta the americans moved in to eradicate the communist uprising (sound familiar)you have to remember that the 'cold war' was at its height then and the west was terrified of the 'atomic bomb' |

After WWII, Vietnam declared it's independence. France would not have it, so they invaded Vietnam to take them over. We felt obligated to help France with money and weapons. When they got their *** kicked, we were already involved so we tried to take over for France. If France would have just let them be, I seriously doubt we would have ever been there. Give France a big F YOU! I hope we never ever bail their *** out again. |
