Why did Somalian pirates attack a US ship now that Obama is in office, why didn't they attack when Bush was in?

Somalian pirates attempted to attack the USNS John Lenthall in September 2008, while Bush was still in office. LENTHALL is not only a US-flagged ship, it is a US Naval Support ship that directly supports the United States Navy and has US Navy personnel onboard. The attack was unsuccessful.

This attack (on Maersk Alabama) has nothing to do with which president is in office. I am a Republican and did not vote for Obama, but the piracy thing is going to continue regardless of who is in the White House until Somalia gets a stable government that can control its own waters.

Somali pirates attacked two US Navy Cruisers in 2006. The USS Cape St. George & USS Gonzalez. Pretty ballsy, and definitely under Dubya's watch.

In 2007 they attacked the US Owned MS Nautica.

And now they've attacked the US Flagged/ DENMARK Owned Maersk Alabama.

Being in the US Navy myself...I can honestly say pirates do not give a darn about who the president is!! Some of you people need to grow up and expand your mind beyond a certain political party. Doesn't matter if Bush or Obama was/is in office the fact remains that the waters in that area need more security...PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Their country is poverty stricken and they will do anything to get there hands on something of value. More than likely they were going to hold the Sailors hostage for ransom. Everytime something doesn't go well people are quick to ridicule Pres. Obama. He was just sworn in in January but we gave Bush EIGHT darn years to make mistakes and put this country in the current position it is in! Get real!!

Somalian Pirates have been hijacking ships off the coast of Somalia for many years, ever since their government fell. It has nothing to do with President Obama being elected. All governments of the world have been warning about the pirates for years. Broaden your horizons, read something, or watch a news program besides Faux News.

Probably because very few commercial vessels fly the American flag anymore. Pirates attack targets of opportunity anyway. They don't care what flag it flies. These are just thugs and criminals after all, from a country with no real functioning government. They really could give a rip about the niceties of foreign policy.

Such a funny! But I think I have the answer---when you wave an American flag, aren't you bragging that you got all the goods, even if you aren't on an American ship? Ok, fine, not so funny, but still, hello, pirates will be pirates. I'm so glad I don't own a boat right about now! ha ha and I think I'll keep the ragged flag in storage for a few more days.

Let me see you have a Republican that protects America with force when necessary vs. a Democrat that already in his short time in office has told the entire world we shouldn't have used force to combat terrorism, we shouldn't use force for anything, we should only talk, he's stated we won't put up missile defence systems to protect ourselves, he's told Iran that is at war with us and is on their way to getting a nuclear weapon that they have stated they will use against the US and Israel not to worry we won't take any actions against them except to talk. Gee I wonder why the world would see this Democrat named Obama as not being a threat.

When Bush was on office _one_ US ship was attacked by pirates. Afterwards the US ship reported that they estimated that half the priates survived.

Not surprising that the pirates waited for a weak president before they tried attacking another one of our ships.

Well if they did it on purpose... then its probably because obama will just apologize and probably end up giving the somalians something out of it. Bush would have done something more forceful... (and every american and there mom would still **** on his life for it.)

Funny how Obama hasnt been dumped on for whats going on but Bush certainly would have. I mean its fine that the troops are pulling out yet right?
