Because the NATO handgun norm was 9mm

i think it was to match the kind of ammo we use with that of our allies. i think it was a bad move because the 1911 has much better stopping power. |

Because the stockpile of M1911's were old and worn out (most were made during or before WWII) and 0.45 ACP is not a NATO standard caliber. So when a competition for a new pistol was initiated in the mid-80's all the contenders were 9mm with the M1911 used as the control. The Baretta Model 92 won and became the M9. |

One reason was the weight factor. .45 acp ( Automatic Cartridge, Pistol) is heavier as is the ammo for it.
9mm being lighter allows the individual troop to carry more gear, ammo, etc.
You'd need more ammo because the 9mm is not as efficient at putting a man down as the .45 auto. |
