First off the guy that answered your question first is an IDIOT. Congress limits us on how many not high school grads we can enlist each year and with the retention levels at an all time high we are being restricted even more. We are still taking GEDs on a limited basis with higher qualifications. Meaning you have to score at least a 50 on the asvab and you can't require any kind of law waivers. If you have a clean criminal record and you do well on the asvab you may be able to get in still.. go see a recruiter and find out how qualified you are or what you need to work on. I don't forsee us opening up GEDs altogether any time before October at the earliest. Good luck to you.
Addition, unlike what Jo is saying to you in her/his response. The army has never lowered its enlistment requirements that is simply what you hear on the news. The requirement to enlist has always been between 16-99 depending the limits imposed by congress. When I joined 25 years ago I could get in with a 16. For the 10 years I have been in recruiting a minimum of 31 has been required and in most cases a 50 on the asvab. I really wish people would do their research before talking out of their fourth point of contact. We have in the recent past allowed more waivers due to the larger numbers of people joining the army. Also, you obviously have no clue on the types of people that enlist if you think we only have impoverished uneducated people in the Army. |

Go speak with a recruiter and have things clarified. There is no commitment or obligation to speak with one, and they can answer any question you have. |

Because people like you, that use "taken" instead of "taking", and "re open" when it should be "reopen."
Jeez. |

They may have made this decision based on the realization that those with a G.E.D. were under the misconception that "why did the army quit taken GEDs?" was a grammatically correct query!
The question should read "Why did the Army quit taking G.E.D.s?"! Even better would be "Why did the Army stop accepting those with a G.E.D.?." |

With the unemployment rate rising, more people are wanting to join the military. They can afford to make their enlistment qualifications more stringent. |

Because there are limits on how many GEDS are let in each year if you want to join the best thing you could do is go get 15 college credits and then they see your GED and your 15 credits as a full hs diploma |

The Army, as do all of the branches, have limits in place on how many that hold a GED are enlisted. Floods of new recruits will be graduating high school next month, plus the economy has men and woman going the military route thus enlistment levels are at a point where they're only taking those with diplomas. GED's will still accepted, just not right now. Check back with a recruiter in a couple of months. |

They stopped taking GED's because the Manpower
that is now applying have "High School Diplomas"...
That is a direct result of the economy... |

The military has NOT lowered it's standards and DOES accept a G.E.D.!! Just because you have a G.E.D. does NOT, in any way, shape, or form, mean you have a lower level of knowledge or ability to learn. You would be amazed to know the percentage of soldiers who signed on with a G.E.D. YES a diploma is preferred, but a G.E.D. is no different when joining, depending on the branch. Some people were ripped out of school and didn't have the options to finish and get a H.S. diploma due to family issues or some other life altering event, but were able to receive their G.E.D. and then some continued to to get a H.S. diploma. |
