Pearl harbor was the nail in the coffin along with trade goods not reaching europe (german subs) and also the cruise ship the lucitania was sank by german subs.

There was no, "let's go save the world!". It was purely for self-serving motives. However, that in no way belittles the great contribution the regular American Joes made to beating back the Hun. Politics simply aren't all that heroic and pure. But regular people's actions can be.

This is something Americans seem unable to grasp. Criticism directed towards your country's foreign policy is not meant as a personal insult to you as an individual.

The attack at Pearl Harbor is the real reason. Prior to this the US was attempting to stay out of the war in Europe and Asia. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor Hitler declared war against the US and between the two our hands were forced.

Because of a multitude of factors ranging from social, economic to political. Pearl Harbor was just the excuse needed to get into the war without looking like we wanted to.
