A peaceful resolution is generally preferable. There's no reason to think the SEAL team was there days ago, and if they'd started firing, there's the very real risk that one would survive at least long enough to kill the hostage. There's no sense trying to second-guess the people on the scene, especially after such a proper outcome. |

things can go wrong and they wanted the greatest chance that the american would live. if the pirates are just standing around doing nothing, then they arent an immenant threat to the american and better jsut to starve them out. if they're about to shoot him though, then thats the time to step it up a few notches |

Didn't you see what happened in the French rescue mission? They got there and opened fire right away (just like you suggest in your question). What happened? Some of the men they were hoping to rescue ended up killed by their gun fire. That's exactly what the Navy tried to avoid. The captain is safe now thanks to their actions. |
