Why do Army SF and SFOD-D have Captains leading ground teams?

I understand you need an officer commanding maybe from a TOC far away, but on the ground shouldn't a MSG. or SGM lead the operation? I can imagine that a MSG or SGM would have way more experience in special operations than an officer that probably is younger and previously commanded infantry?

They have officers for a reason. TO LEAD. That's kinda what they're taught to do. No offense to enlisted folk or anything. If you're a Spec Ops officer then you have been through every bit of training that the MSGT has to get there. They screen these guys thoroughly to make sure they are fit to lead during sensitive operations.
The MSGT would most likely be a second in command offering insight. They do have a say in things if that's what you mean. And there is no golden rule. It's just that officers USUALLY lead. |

All of these Captains have received the necessary qualifications as well as passed all the US Army Special Forces Selection and training. Their grade allows them to have authority over these enlisted personnel.
You also forget that some of these Captains, and perhaps several of the 2LTs and 1LTs could potentially be prior enlisted soldiers. It is not uncommon to find a well experienced 35 year old 2LT, who may have already served time as an NCO, to be found being a platoon leader of an Airborne unit, and I would probably expect a similar case for these Special Operators.
The ground teams and enlisted personnel need a sufficient leader/ paper pusher for Admin purposes to include awards and decorations ( jokingly, but who else is going to do them :D ). |

don't worry, they know their job.
btw. as far as i remember, one of last MoH recipients in memoriam, was a SF Navy Lieutenant (=Army Captain) in A-stan.
