Find answers to your legal question.

Why do Europeans act like America is an imperialistic country that goes around starting wars.?

The only two wars America has ever started were the Revolutionary War, and that was so we could have our freedom, and the Civil War, and that was between only us and it was to abolish slavery. Every other war we were either asked to join or we were brought into by being attacked.

The only time we were at all imperialistic was when we acquired, through diplomacy not through force, what is now present day USA.

America did not want to be in the Mexican-Texas War, we were asked by Texas to join, then later Texas joined the US. We did not want to be in WWI, but we were brought in by an agreement between Germany and Mexico which threatened us, WWII we were attacked at Pearl Harbor, Vietnam we were asked to help, Korea we were asked to help, Cold War(not a real war anyway) was just because of the Nuclear scare after WWII. And finally Iraq, We were bombed at the World Trade Center and The Pentagon. We have never started a foreign war.

So where do the Euros get the idea that we start wars???
Additional Details
I personally think we should just pull out of every country we are in and refuse to help any war efforts around the world and when some country asks us to help we should just say no and when they lose, we should just laugh at them.

Iraq had nothing to do with the WTC or Pentagon. You forget we've been in Bosnia, Somalia, Lebanon, Libya. Oh, that's right those don't count. How about Israel (which is almost a US protectorate)?

vt500ascott3
Ahem, I beg to differ.

The Mexican War of 1848 and the Spanish-American War of 1898 were pure acts of naked imperialist agression.

Vietnam and Korea were a little more complicated and not necessarily examples of imperialism; however, there is no question that neither of those wars really had to be fought, and that there was nothing to be gained. Especially after our experience in Korea, it was crzy for us to think that there was something to be gained in Vietnam.

And of course, the current Iraq war is the cherry on the Sunday. There REALLY AND TRULY is no reason for us to be there. A lot of people cynically suggest that we're there to steal the oil. And maybe they're right. How would I know?

Maybe america didn't start most of the wars that it is involved in....but when was the last time it made things better...oh and by the way you should check out some actual (rather than government sponsored) history of the good ol' US and A...I think that the natives version might be a bit different

Because it is Imperialistic AND warmongering.
You`ve been late for two World Wars and are doing your damnedest to be early for the next.
Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 - none of the bombers were Iraqui. You only led the coalition in both Gulf Wars for one reason only - OIL.You have more than enough on your own soil to last you but prefer to take from elsewhere and stockpile yours.

They all do not think this way. We were stationed in Germany for 11 years and never had any problems. We got along with all the Germans and there are Indians and people from all over who like us...... When 911 happened, the Germans left flowers and candles and said prayers at the gates of the military post we were at and many others.
But we do seem to stick our nose in sometimes and not be able to get out of it, I will say that!

most americans are that far up their administrations *** they can see what their governments doing, hence half the answers above are wrong.
America wants to control the world, problem is, us "euros" have a brain of our own.
Im not anti american, but its hard to watch you guys follow blindly a total idiot for two terms,
as for us needing the US to save our *** in the war? check your facts mate, and look at how many of your own good soldier boys have been killed BY YOUR OWN troops. thats unheard of in the british army.

i sincerely hope the wars end soon so every country gets their soldiers back safe.

Other posters have effectively shot great big holes in your argument.

I`ll only point out your remark (rant) that during WW2 "England and the rest of Europe would be speaking German" right now!!!!!!!!
Have to differ on this point, or have you never heard of the Battle of Britain? The RAF effectively destroyed the Luftwaffe thus gaining air superiority and ending any chance of an invasion of the British Isles by the Nazis. It may have been a close run thing, but that`s how the cookie crumbles.
You should also be aware of the fact that the German language was never imposed on any of the occupied countries so you`re wrong on that score as well.
Have a nice day!

Maybe because America sees herself with a "special moral endowment" and feels justified in projecting influence beyond her borders?

Since Viet Nam, we have intervened in Grenada, Panama, Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iraq again, and numerous air raids carried out against Ghaddafi, Saddam, and Slobodan MiloÅ¡eviÄ...

Actually, the use of military power does not necessarily make a nation “imperialistic.” Rather, the reasons for those interventions are what determines whether a nation is building or defending an “empire” or not. And in each intervention I listed, US motives for using military power could be defended as a response to chaos, tyranny, or despotism.

Trouble just seems to follow us I guess..........;)

Martin G
Do we?

All of us?

Are you sure?

One little flaw in your argument. No Iraqi was involved in 9/11. So why attack that country? If you (and us (the British)) attack a country then we are starting the conflict I would say.

GA Girl
Angola, Somalia, Ethiopia,Colombia, Panama, Cuba , Bolivia, Grenada, Honduras, Costa Rica, Libya, and that's what we know about.

there were many Indian wars, also , they didn't just disappear.

Do you really think the civil war was fought to free the slaves, check that out?

as a so called european (englishman actually) i feel i need to answer this so called question. i have never thought that americans go around starting wars and i dare say our services are grateful of your help in times of war (thats when your not killing them with ur so called friendly fire!!!!) and believe it or not the usa doesnt do the winning of all wars it joins in it is a team effort between whatever nations are involved spilling the blood of childrens mothers, fathers, and even siblings on the battlefield so who cares who started what and lets just be proud of who we are and spare a moment for the forces that have and will give the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom that we have today, and please i hope that your view is not the general concensus of the usa as it as an accurate statement as saying all blondes are stupid, all fat people are greedy and all ethnics are thugs and robbers which isnt true

Regardless of how many wars you may or may not have started, the fact remains that American corporations are expanding horribly into places they don't belong. McDonalds, Nike and other multinational countries are bleeding poor countries dry. That is why you are seen as Imperialistic, ou go in and leech money from an area, making improvements there only for your own benefit. This is why America is seen as aEmpire, not necessarily through force but through dollar imperialism.

Not being funny fella, but Europe pretty much had the war banged to rights, you came in and help us mop up in the closing stages, you were only interested in joining AFTER pearl Harbour because the nations pride was hurt.
You don't necessarily 'Start' the wars, but by god, if there is something to get out of it you will join in!
The war in Afghanistan was pretty much a certainty after the Taliban, that you guys trained by the way, refused to allow an oil line to be built across it to the coast.....you can't say 'NO' to America!
Plus....having worked with a number of you guys in Iraq.....I can honestly say a large number of your boys give the impression of being very 'gung-ho' or however it's spelt, don't worry, I keep in touch with some as good friends, but as usual the minority spoil it for the few.

Dude, Iraq and WTC/Pentagon bombings have NOTHING in common.

The terrorists who did those things were Saudi-Arabians if I remember correctly. So you should have attacked Saudi-Arabia instead of Iraq (which had nothing to do with the terrorist strikes in USA).

I agree with you 100% We do more for the world & give more to good causes than any other country but nobody wants to think anything good about us. They just use us and then talk crap about us. It is because they are jealous. This is the best country in the world and they know that. They are jealous because they dont have as much freedom & opportunity. Look at what their government does to them? Especially the British. They get taxed so much that some of them can barely survive and that money go's to the parliament. I agree with you. We should have let the Germans have those brits and the french. And to those of you who want to bring up the native americans, you really need to get educated on you country's history. That was you guys who colonised this place and did all those terrible things to the natives.

I'm a Brit and know from personal experience, born in WW2, that the Americans are very reluctant to go to war and with good reason. First the expected loss of life and second the expense of it all.

Ed Morrow reporting from Trafalgar Sqaure - the London Blitz 1940

More Americans died during the American Civil War than all the wars in which Americans have fought ever since.

The Civil War is highlighed in the minds of the American People and still today the noise of battle is clearly heard.

The British have a very long history of war. Indeed there are some 200 battlefield sites right here in England - we must have spent centuries killing each other before finally turning out attention to wars abroad.

Even those of us with just a small grasp on the works of Wm. Shakespeare, know only too well of our war-like history.

In my opinion, this is the number one general of all time, George S Patton, USA, played here by George C Scott.

Gen. Patton only made the above speech when it became so painfully obvious that America was faced with a stark choice - either you get on top of the Nazis, or they get on top of you.

I have to tell you in all honesty, that we British have remained armed to the teeth since the start of the Napoleonic Wars. We still have the world's largest military industrial complext at Portsmouth Harbour.

Here's the oldest warship in the world, HMS Victory, firing a broadside in salute to Lord Nelson on the 200th annivary of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805-2005.

well we are in alot of different countries doing "policing". and your talking about wars. cold war not being a real war? if the cold war wasnt a real war then that doesnt make any of the other countries we faught in a war. after all congress didnt declair war on those other countries after WW2. but the cold war was just as dangerous if not more dangerous than Vietnam and Korea. sure no shots were fired but all it took was a push of a button and the world as we know it would be gone. and this Iraq situation we did start it. Iraq didnt fly those planes into the WTC and the Pentagon. our beef was with Bin Laden because he claimed responsability for the attacks and he was in an entirely different country. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. we attacked Iraq because we thought they had the technology to make WMD's which they didnt.

Because you do?

Iraq, by the way, had no connection to the WTC attack, since it was well known in the intelligence community that Saddam Hussein would not allow the existence of ANY threat to his power, including that of a fundamentalist religious movement.

You undoubtedly started the war in Iraq.

You have used military force to remove and install rulers in Grenada and Nicaragua, which while not wars were certainly direct interference a nation's right to self determination.

dogsngoat
Maybe because we are and we do.

Ever hear of the pre-emptive war against Iraq (pre-emptive means we started it)

And the US has 702 foreign bases in 130 countries. Sounds like an empire to me.

Forget your explanation. You are addicted to others telling you what to do.

Or would you like others to be your slaves so you can continue to exploit others so you continue to do less?

, I am afraid throughout history the powerful have always been accused of being the aggressor ,In early history it was Afton true, it is the downside of success I'm afraid . jealousy is behind all of it . Jealousy by the inadequate is a normal emotion so just ignore the twits . As an Englishman i have always been grateful for the brave Americans that have died defending us . I has always amazed me how predigest people always have an excuse to down others but do nothing themselves , listening to these whingers you would think that Saddam was an angel and lover of his people that it is OK for Bin Larden to slaughter thousands mostly Muslims , Hitler had a perfect excuse to maim the world , pol pot was an humanitarian , The Chinese government are not aggressive and do not invade other people, Russians wouldn't hurt a fly , All of these people have been defended by people on this site , So that they can paint America as the villain. The way that i see it America defends its interests and it people it is not a saint or a villain like most civilisations it survives the best way it can . Name me one civilisation in the whole history of the world that has not done that.

Peachy
Totally agree with what you're saying, and don't pay attention to any of these pathetic 'politically correct' liberals with no sense of patriotism.

Maybe if the media would tell them to be patriotic, they would.

As for the person that asked, "When was the last time the USA did anything that made someone's situation better?" Ummm..hello, space cadet, the USA gives more economic and humanitarian assistance to other countries than any other country..so the answer to that would be...EVERY SINGLE DAY!

Now, back to work so that some of these whiners can be sure to pick up their welfare checks...it's almost the first of the month.
