As a Marine, your rifle is your life.
It's not a toy or a prop for pictures. The Drill Instructors in boot camp make sure this is instilled in our brain housing groups (heads) from the very start. In the movie "FULL METAL JACKET" there is a perfect example of what happened to recruits who call their weapon a "gun".

Because of their Creed:
My Rifle: The Creed of a US Marine
by Major General William H. Rupertus (USMC, Ret.)
This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.
My rifle, without me, is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will...
My rifle and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit...
My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage as I will ever guard my legs, my arms, my eyes and my heart against damage. I will keep my rifle clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will...
Before God, I swear this creed. My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We
are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy, but peace! |

Remember that the Marines are part of the Navy. The giant things on battleships are guns. Rifles are individual weapons. Much like a Navy man will get upset if you call his ship a boat or a submariner will get upset if you call his boat a ship. |

To a marine a Rifle is his best friend and it keeps him alive on the battle field....There rifle is a very important part of them on the battle field and that is why they call it a Rifle and not a gun...... |

Ding ding ding, Math_prof finally got it. A "gun" is a crew-served weapon, meaning it takes two or more people to properly operate it. An M240 or an M60 or an M2 are all machine guns and are properly called guns. An M16 on the other hand is an individual weapon and therefore properly called "weapon" or "rifle." |

I'll give you a very simplified answer. When a military recruit goes through boot camp (basic training) whether in the Marines or Army, they train you to call it a rifle or a weapon, but never a gun. It's just a military thing. It's a training requirement. So a military person who goes through all that training and later goes out into civilian life, will still call it a rifle or a weapon, but will be uncomfortable calling it a gun...only because of the rigid prior training. It's as simple as that. |

Marines are tought the the Rifle is his best fried in a sort of way. Calling it a gun is just a generalization and doesn't seem to feel right. It is like calling your fiance your girlfriend.
I know it is a little silly, but we are just that way. |

A gun is an artillery piece, a firearm or rifle is a hand held weapon. |

My husband is in the Army... anytime a call his rifle a "gun" I am corrected that it is not a gun, it is a "weapon"... just one of those things that gets hammered into them during their training. |

The answer lies in scale. Individual weapons are Rifles and Side Arms (Pistols). Guns are crew served weapons (Artillery and ship board naval guns). |

Full Metal Jacket:
Men marching around inside of barracks holding rifles in front of them as Sargent sings/yells and they repeat.
"This is my rifle," (grabs groin) "This is my gun," (lifts rifle a little) "This is for fighting," (grabs groin and shakes it) "This is for fun."
Really though, it's because of their creed that some one mentioned earlier. |
