It's not, the stars are always forward

It symbolises running into battle holding a flag. The flag blows backwards.

It looks that way, right? However, it is supposed to mimic the way an actual flag would look on something moving forward.

Like if someone has a flag sticking out a window, it looks backward -- only for some reason, the patches make it look weird.

there is no backwards, only up side down. If the stars are on the upper left hand corner is relative to direction, the same as on which side the flag is worn on, be it the right or left.

It's symbolic for the soldier holding the flag and moving into the wind (through hard times) and not taking the easy way.
