It's a figure of speech meaning they were treated poorly. |

No one spit on you, so it never happened? I was not spit on. I had dog crap thrown at me. But yes, I was never spit on. |

ok... I don't know where you got your information.. but I have seen news reels that show people spitting on and throwing things at those returning from Vietnam... think before you post, better yet... research!! |

If just one soldier was spit upon, your entire essay would be false. I personally know of one such soldier that was spit on at O'hare national in 1970. |

It happened. There is news footage and first person accounts to support it. I suppose you are one of the ones that deny holocaust ever happened too. |

Some vets coming back from the war were in fact spit on by protestors, some as soon as they got off the plane. Now,it didin't happen to most people, but it did happen. |

If someone spit on you the person who did the spitting would lose teeth. The Anti war people knew that so they did not spit.
I got news for you!!!!

better check your history. Many that were called baby killers were literally spit upon. The whole thing with vietnam was shameful |

Just because no one spat at you, doesn't mean that no soldier was spat at. Many vets were spat at, flipped off, called baby-killers and worse, and denied help readjusting to civilian life. |

Why do you think that YOU as one man among multiple thousands, can speak for all of them?
So you never got spit on. Good for you.
I, however, witnessed this behaviour myself. When the Vietnam Vets would join the WWII and Korean soldiers for the Veteran's Day marchs, they would be actively spit upon by people in the crowd. So what if most of them reverted to long-haired hippies! They were, and forever will be, veterans of a war. And as such, deserve just as much honor as the rest!
Try living in Texas and seeing these guys try to join the ranks of the other Veterans, and see just how much they have to endure as a group!
Again. You are just one man. You were only ever in one location at any given time. What makes you think you can speak for thousands who were nowhere near you at the time. |

It did happen, but not very often.I was a Marine at the time and traveled through airports many times. No one I know ever had any trouble.Only a few crazies were responsible. It was rare and isolated. |

apparently, you did not live in that era, or, you turned a blind eye. Vietnam Veterans were spit upon, and had rocks thrown at the, insulted, and ridiculed. Mainly by hippy groups, who claimed to be for "peace". But, they certainly were not peaceful in their protests. Our veterans deserved better. They were called on to go to a war they didn't want to be in, many opposed the war, but, went anyway. America, Jane Fonda, and even Bill Clinton, owe them a major apology, and even restitution for the punishment inflicted upon them. |

You are wrong. It did happen. It was reported on when it did happen. Check newspapers from the early 1970s. |

The American serviceman and women are the finest on the planet. When this country is called to war it goes. The american servicemen in Vietnam fought with great courage against a very tough and determined enemy. We won ferocius battles that raged for days at a time, often are troops were grossly out numbered. The polIticians kept our military from declareingvictory .The U.S.M.C. and the U.S. ARMY along with the U.S. NAVY and the U.S. AIR FORCE did a remarkable job defending South Vietnam. Try to stay focused here! Those idiots that spat upon returning Vietnam vets [some with only one arm or leg] do not deserve to live in a country] like America that selflessly provides troops to aid other countries being threatened by communists or other forms of oppression. Those idiots were free to do whatever only because of the sacrifices made by the UNITED STATES MILITARY and all the men and women who have given thier lives to keep this great country free. Let us not forget IRAQ KOREA WWII |

Erudite, here you go again. Just a few posts ago, you claimed that this never happened. No you claim it did. Would you please make up your mind?
I was personally assaulted in this manner. So, are you calling me a liar?
You claim to have returned in '71 and '73 -- from where? Canada? England? Your story just continues to fall apart on so many levels. How about you start telling the truth? Or better yet, would you just get lost? |

I was clobbered in the forehead with a beer bottle three days after coming home. Besides, you were Navy And Air Force. You guys had it made compared to us Army guys. Folks didn't target you guys like us. |

I'm a PROUD Vietnam Vet, and, Army, not only were we abused by some folks when we came back, we couldn't get jobs, and nobody bought us drinks, and we were not even welcomed in the VFW's or American Legions, and in short, no one gave a **** about us. We tried real hard over there!! I was fired from my first post-service job when the big shot, non-veteran Boss learned that I was a Vietnam Vet.
Getting spit on would have been minor, compared to the other things.
In many ways, Our Vietnam experience made us stronger, cause we came back having to deal with people like you.
Go screw yourself. |

If you really were a vet I have to ask if you came back in uniform. |

I doubt you are a veteran. If you check the news, it happened in Syracuse to a Fort Drum Soldier where the woman who spit on him was arrested for assault. |

My uncle was in the Marines from 64 to 68. He was recon. He did 2 tours and got a purple heart and a silver star. when he came back walking down the street in his uniform he was spit on. He kicked his *** of course. And got in trouble. My uncle died 3 years ago. He died from cancer. Could this be related to Agent Orange?. His daughter was was born retarded..... Any relation??? When he died he still had his Marine stuff with him. We burried him in his Dress blues, with all his medals and badges. I was there in mine. My uncle never regreted being a Marine and defending his country. He gave me a reason to join and go to 3 conflicts in 4 and a half years. And for someone to spit on veterans...... They are cowards. People go to the military and war cause others dont have the ba@@s to. The Veterans from Vietnam were treated like crap! But if you werent you are a lucky person. |

Unless you are all knowing and all seeing you can't say that. My brother was in the Navy during Vietnam, and never even got close enough to see land. When he came home people at the air port screamed at the service men when they got off the plane. People yelled "baby killers" and yes spit on them.
At a reunion just a few years ago some of his buddies were talking about it and one of them said when he got home in San Bernardino someone actually threw rabbit blood on his white uniform.
I'm glad you didn't have to go through that but don't call people it happened to liars. |

When you are willing to die for something and then ignored after you've done your part of the bargain, it's the same as being spit upon. |
