so they can blend in with the culture around them. the live and fight with the locals. it is also a way to throw off the bad guys. they dont look like normal soldiers. it is just like back in vietnam, macvsog would wear black uniform like the nva. |

Most operations today are in the middle east. In Iraq especially having a beard is a sign of being a man, clean shaven kids with no facial hair and a high-and0tight haircut are soon as children in a way. Its just a culture thing.
They have to blend in with the local populace in the middle east to carry out covert operations, and therefore have to look more like the enemy. Also int he army everyone has to be real clean cut, and its kind of a bragging right for special forces to be able to grow out their hair/beards. |

To blend in with the surrounding culture a little better.
Also, they are more likely to get somebody to talk with them (if they are trying to get a local to help) if they have a beard, this shows they respect and know the guy's culture. |
