I have been Active Duty Army for 15 years and I have seen this trend get worse. I agree that any Military Memebr should not wear their duty uniform off post, except for travel back and forth to work. It is getting more common to ACU in civilian establishments, and I hate it. I saw a Private walking around a mall one Saturday. Unfortunately, I have to agree that they are trying to be noticed and get attention since the American people are appreciative of our service. The Marines are on point when it comes to this. They are specific in their regulation and enforce it. You will never see a Marine in duty uniform out and about, minus a gas station. They can't even go off post to eat lunch in duty uniform. I do believe that if you want to wear your Dress Uniform out, then go for it. I wouldn't, but hey, everyone is different.
As far as the comment about the Army will take anyone, sounds like your a little jealous that your a REMF...... |

Have you ever considered that the army is far bigger than the air force? Could that be why you see so many more army personnel in uniform than Air Force? And who are you to say that they are not allowed to wear their uniform? Maybe they are just proud of it? Maybe they are running an errand after work? If they are not doing anything to disrespect the service and are representing the army in a positive manner, then what is the problem? |

Um, read up on your own regs, not the Army's regs. |

For someone supposedly in the Air Force you should have a lot more respect for your fellow service members and not demean them like you have. Secondly have you thought that maybe they are reservist so they could be on their way home and stopping of to run errands and such. Maybe ask them politely why they feel the need to wear their uniforms everywhere? |

I do not know the current directives, however wearing a uniform (correctly) in public is a show of pride. I am retired Army and I have the greatest respect for Soldiers and members of our other services. Anybody serving our country in time of war is Somebody Special, even airmen! |

It's "wear their" not "where there" smart guy. Check yourself before talking badly about our brothers and sisters in other services. You are an embarrassment to the Air Force uniform. |

Stateside uniform policy is left up to the commander of the post, some may allow you to wear your uniform to and from work/post and maybe allow you to stop enroute but only if it's after a certain time period or for a short time
Overseas: the local commander may mandate all Soldiers refrain from wearing the uniform off post in order to prevent them from making themselves targets of terrorism.
Deployed: All deployed Soldiers will wear the ACU enroute to and from their leave location mainly due to the fact that we do not take civilian clothes to deployed locations and to also display a sense of pride in knowing that America's Best (all services inclusive) are home to see their loved ones. |

May be they have pride in what they do and who they are. |

locally we have an air force base, an air national guard, army reserve and its not unusual to several out in public in uniform. No one thinks a bad thing about it and to most its a showing of pride. I will say most of the ones you see in uniform are E4 on up including officers. could it be the E3 down have not as yet developed that kind of pride |

It's funny you mention this. When my husband came back from his deployment he and the guy he was traveling with were told by the airline that if they wore their uniform (dcu's) they could fly first class. They told them no that they weren't allowed to do that. But yet Army guys do it. I think it looks bad. And that's something that sticks out in my mind when we graduated basic and were going to our tech schools. If you were flying you had to wear either blues or civi's, if you were being driven (like staying on Lackland) you wore your BDU's (yes it was 11 years ago, I know BDU's are on their way out!)
My understanding was also that to go to nice restaurants, and basically professional type places you wore your blues, casual places you could wear your bdu's.
I also can't stand when I see people walking around without their cover on, blouse off, or wearing their uniform in some other out of code way. Yes I know blouses off in some situations are granted, but not in the situations I've seen. |

I guess they didn't have time to change. Who cares if they wear a uniform?
I like it when they do. That way I can say thank you to them.
I would be serving with all of you in the military if I didn't have medical problems.
I am quite upset I can't serve with you. It was my dream actually and I tried to get in but they wouldn't let me because I couldn't trick the blood tests and make them normal! :(
My 2 grandfathers served in the military. |

I second Matt P and timmack007. get off your high horse and stop trying to act better than soldiers. You're not just a disgrace to airmen, you're a disgrace to the military. We're supposed to be on the same side and you're sitting here judging saying being in the army is nothing special? Anyone that serves their country is something ****** special. as much as i hate to admit it, even you are.
btw I see just as many airmen in uniform offpost as I do soldiers in my city. just because all you've seen is soldiers doesn't mean your own people dont do it too. I'm proud to wear it off uniform and my command says nothing against it. and if they're ok with it, i'll wear it wherever i damn well want. |

Because they want to show off that they worked hard and are proud to be serving their country, why do you care so much? |

Annnnnndd, here is just another reason why people make fun of the chair force...uhhh, i mean air force. Always complaining, you guys get the best housing, isn't that enough for you? Damn! |

They're showing off. Hey, look at me, I'm a soldier! But it's understandable why - the cinema gives you a discount, fast food joints upsize for free as a matter of policy, the owner of a cafe will smile and give you free chips with your burger and to top it off, considerably more girls will try to catch your eye, if any did before.
I've done it before during hour-long lunchbreaks while doing casual work at my reserve unit when changing in and out of civvies would eat up too much time (Ha, get the pun? Eat up? Tee hee!), but it's otherwise something that shouldn't be done as a principle. Besides using the uniform for self-gratification, there's the whole idea that your uniforms aren't your homeboy clothes or your relaxation rags.
Such people are really taking things for granted. In Britain, you might be accosted by yobs. In Australia, you might get stabbed on public transportation. In Northern Ireland, you probably would get stabbed. |

I know exactly what you mean! and I dont feel your being disrespectful like some of the other people are saying...they probably do this exact same thing :) but I believe its a very valid question. I to also see many Army guys wearing there uniform around town. Not recruiters, not just "running erands" but actually flaunting it around. I do agree that they have a sense of pride when they are in uniform but I also feel that they are trying to be flashy and show off in front of civilians. Usually these guys I see are generally pretty young, and most just recently have gotten in, so I can see why they'd want to show off because they just got in, and they are excited yada yada. It also gets them in good with the ladies :) You know women cant deny a man in uniform hehe. Well thats my opinion but I do find it quite annoying to be honest. I dont like people that try to show off. He was showing off when I seen him too because he was at a highschool chorus concert in his bdu's, how ridiculous! |

Pretty sure it is to show off or laziness in the cases I have seen. I am talking about utilities, not dress uniforms, or service, or whatever. Seen one wearing his at a bowling alley, then seen another at a strip club. Although I do believe they ironed their trousers. |

It is very annoying. Do nurses run around in scrubs all day or doctors wear their lab coats all day? Firemen don't wear their gear all the time everywhere they go. I suppose the are seeking out approval or respect from society. It is silly and very ridiculous. |

I was in the army (cav scout) with 2 pumps into the sand box, And now i'm a Marine with 1 pump in and getting ready to go play in the sand again. To be honest its not professional to walk around in weird places (Mall, Wal-Mart, Down the street . etc) in their ACU's just for the helluva it. The Army Combat Uniform which is a utility uniform should only be meant for training and combat. Don't me wrong i liked my soldiers and marines being proud but id rather they wear an army or marine corps T-shirt or dress uniforms instead. The reason i left the army is the discipline slipping across the board and so i wish the army would follow marine corps lead and restrict uniform wear so it is To and From base only wear, and teach these kids they can feel proud without the uniform on and that there are soldiers 24/7 with or without there uniform. All marines are taught that they are Marines when they finish the crucible to when we take our last breath. So we don't need out uniform to feel proud or feel like marines. I wish the army brass would teach these young soldiers that same mentality. So OOO-RAH Marines Semper Fi and HOOAH (If you aint Cav You Aint S--T) |

hey just reading some post here...mmmm..thinking why are some people to so quick to talk about army boys wearing their uniforms in public? how about nurses and doctor's comming home in scrubs and stopping off in a bar or store...is that ok for them to it anymore then army boys? i say leave people alone and let them wear what they want weather it be uniforms or a g-string bathing suit..who cares what one wears as long as they aren't sticking a gun in your face and telling you to pass over your cash...people be more concerned about cleaning up the streets not criticizing how and what people wear..thank you and have a great day evening or night whatever it may be...lol. |
