Why do people do stupid things like join the military?

Both my brothers r in the military. It's so they can serve this s****y country. But they r rich, so I guess it's worth it.

I would join the military because it is a good paying respectable job... Also, the military (At least in my country) insists that you have or are willing to obtain an education so that you don't say things like "Let them it want effect me" or "they want need a military" or "Some has a problems with this country"

Some people actually have pride in their country and one of the most patriotic things a person can do is to serve in its country's military. Some times, it is a way for a person to gain an education they could not normally afford themselves otherwise.

I don't always agree why my country gets into the conflicts it does, but it is the military's job to serve...and men and women are out there laying their lives on the line for me and everone else so we can live the lives that we do.

Is it stupidy to join the military?...NO! It is an honor.

You might find a good education if you join the military, and get good scholarships for universities too. Some people have pride and honor. I think the better question is; why do people join the military to take advantage of all the benefits, but expect not to do what the military expects of them for all they get. The problem is that the younger generation thought that they could get free benefits from the government without thinking first about what the military is for. Younger people like yourself that expects a free ride in the world as if you were entitled to it. America does care about the people, and I agree with you that the government DOES kinda use us like pawns in their own political agendas, but if you look at countries that DONT go to the aide of other countries, they are failing and in danger of oppression and torture. Those countries that "mind their own business" have no business to mind! The reason successful countries are successful, is because they reach out and help. That makes for a better freer world. The countries that never help get abused by other countries because they have no spine to protect themselves, and no friends to help. Thats why it is important to change the world as much as we can, to secure better futures for people like yourself that dont understand the big picture (yet). Some day in the not too distant future, you will see great benefits from things you dont understand right now- and you know who will take the credit? The politicians who are in charge when it happens (no matter which party it is).

Americans were living high on the hog when Clinton was in office because of moves made by previous administrations. Also with the crooked book-keeping kept during the Clinton years, it was inevidable that we would be broke now. People that do not understand the way economies rise and fall, always blame the wrong person for failure, and praise the wrong person for success. Thats politics!

Why do people join the military? Because they believe in freedom and justice. Sometimes their sacrifice is for nothing, but usually it is for a great purpose, even if we dont understand.

Not everyone who joins will be sent to Iraq. The military offers several great benefits. Money for college, training, retirement, Veteran's benefits, it's really a good choice.

Switzerland is proof you can be a well-armed, peaceful country. Hitler didn't even dare think about going through Switzerland to attack France. The place is well-armed and ready to surprise any invader. Today, most young men there are reservists and have rifles and bullets in their own homes.

I strongly agree that you should have your own opinion on the matter. That is what the troops do, defend your freedoms. But for heaven sakes if you are going to ask a question at least don't make yourself look like an utter moron. I mean your question doesn't make any sense. Did you even pass the 2nd grade? Many people join the military because they don't have other opportunities for a sucessful and rewarding career. For many people, joining the military is the only way the can pay for college, or the only way they can get out of an economically depressed town (which was probably overrun by Wal Mart, but that's a separate issue). Other people join the military because they come from a long line of military men and want to continue the tradition and make their family proud. There are many other reasons people join the military. It's not a stupid decision. In peacetime, the military offers opportunities to young men and women who don't have other options, and in the case of a legitimate war, the military is necessary to protect our country. The US military has done good in the past (World War II, for example).

The current war in Iraq is unjust, unnecessary, and should never have happened, but that is NOT the fault of the men and women of the US armed forces.

Alot of people join the Military because it's family tradition passed down from grandfather to father and to son and now daughters. Not only tarditions, but the benifits from being a veteran are good also like buying a home, seeing the world and growing up. Some are very patriotic and will die for the people who they feel they are protecting. I hate war. but what would this world look like and feel like if we didn't have them?? :(

Well, the fact is that we are in war. So, a miliatry is necessary in order to protect the peope of this country. Now, if we SHOULD be in the war is another thing all together....
But since their is a war, the people in the militayr are giving up their lives to protect! There is NOTHING stupid about that!

I agree. I strongly urge you to move to a country where there is no military, as you clearly understand that the world is filled with peaceful people who would be really nice to us if we just disarmed ourselves. That's why people attack you, isn't it? Because you have weapons? And clearly this country doesn't care anything about you. Look at the education YOU received. Shame on them. They should have forced you to learn. We also need to let other countries attack our allies and let our allies lose without our help, because it's not our business, right? We should have left Kuwait to Saddam even though they asked for our help, and then when Saddam attacked us when we defended the border of Kuwait, we should have surrendered, and let him in. Better! After the eleven years of cease fire that we had with Iraq and multiple warning by the U.N. that "they were going to do something serious any day now..." we should have waited another eleven years while Saddam kept telling everyone he really did have WMDs. Then, when Iran gets the bomb, we should really close the ranks and open the borders completely.
Oh, dear. I'm rambling. Must be the liberal I ate this morning.

It's too bad we have to accept that being a coward and ingrate is also part of freedom. Keep it up. Just don't expect us to respect you for it.

Joining the military doesn't automatically mean "combat". There are SEVERAL things you can do in the military that utilize people's strengths and passions. Plus, you get in AMAZING physical shape while you're at it. For some people it's what they really WANT to do. And you shouldn't judge them for that.

I see NO justification for this war, but I am thankful for all of the decent and professional people serving in our armed forces. This country, divided as it is, deeply cares.

If only we COULD be like Costa Rica - which has no standing army, but it may be a while before ever could do this.

Joining the military is not stupid; it's courageous. If we did not have a military; then the aftermath of 9/11 would have been more 9/11's...you would not be sitting at your computer asking such ignorant questions, you'd probably be dead due to terrorists who came in to our unprotected country, mutilated it because there was no one here to protect us...alas..the military. Go back to where you came from, I can tell you're not American by the way you talk, you don't like it here, then leave....like they say, "love it or leave it"!!!

I wouldn't say sitting on the computer reading questions is risking my life. It all depends on what you do in the military and what branch you serve in. It is a good place to get training and education that you won't get in most jobs.

Ok. I was an army men at the borders of Nikaragua and El Salvador , Contras and Guerrilas just to give you an idea, i enroll the Army because at that time Iwas Stupid, no Wife, no Kids, no one to really demostrate my afection and love, to me join the army, first you came an unrespecfull person, second you get training to be a killer, third at the country that i served as an army men they vareily provide as with food or any income, my experience was only wasting time, today in my opinion honestly is nothing to figth for, i allready found myself, at that time i was lost in the world, i think are better places, and better ways to get some food to your table, not killing people, my cousin an Irak Vet was making $120,00 a year but he didnot enjoy that money for so long, you know what i mean, now i join the Army of Jesus and is working for me not killing people but helping people, not been a pretender but a good Christian God bless you and God bless America.
