in a traditional invasion, they're the first ones in and the last ones out. the air force does recon and preliminary bombing, then the navy sails over and sends its planes to do more bombing. the navy then drops off the marines, who march through and shoot everything that moves. The Army then comes in behind them and cleans up and maintains control. When it's time to leave, the army packs up, and the marines march out behind them. The Marines are the crazy ones because they do a lot of the shooting, and are pretty much always on the front lines. They are also held to a somewhat higher standard of physical ability. |

The Marines want you to think that because it gives them a reputation they want and a psychological edge in battle. I doubt it was intentionally done, but word of mouth has given it urban legend status, likely through the filter of civilians who didn't understand what they were hearing or were being told exaggerated things. |

I am a Corporal in the US Marines. I have heard this since day one.
I'm really not sure why they say that. Most Marines are very sharp thinkers and very loyal to the cause for which they volunteer. We are all very close, as in a brotherhood. I would rather have my Marine buddies there with me than any civilian buddy. Maybe because we go where we are sent to do our job even if its scary or we might not come back. I see it as Patriotism. |

Marines are NOT crazy.....
In a society where everyone is out for themselves.....and will step on their neighbor to get ahead.... the ESPRIT de CORPS that sustains the Marine is "foreign" and only seems "crazy" |

Because they don't understand why they do it and some never will. If you have a family member that is a Marine, you know what they are like. My dad and both his brothers are Marines and, yeah, they are crazy. They don't take sh*t from people who never joined, and sort of look down on the civilians who complain about life. Anyways, this is just my point of view, not sure if all are like that, but the ones I grew up with are. |
