Why do people say marines arent smart?

I only know a couple of marines, but the marines I know are not stupid at all. Very smart men and women. According to a couple people who have been in both the marines are suppose to be the hardest (physically.) They never said anything about the mental part. But who are "they" who have been telling you this anyway?

I think this a myth, especially from the times when judges gave people the choice of service or jail( did this really happen?). I have never been in the military, but the people I know in all branches are not dumb at all. I would say it is a very good career choice. Good luck to you

Its just a stereotype because the Marines main thing is infantry which does not require a high asvab score.

back when i went in in the 70s the marines took alot of people as did the army,, we got better training in the corps,, guess the rep stuck after all these years,, the marines were the toughest back then,, cant speak of todays marine

Well as far as ASVB scores, you don't have to score as high as some of the other branches. I have been stationed with Marines before, when it comes to their job... the ones I know, have been efficent. You will fit in. All branches are good, they just give each other slack. In the end they all really need each other.

It stems from the fact that during boot camp, marines are taught to forget what they think and know, and respond to commands from those over them. That way, they will be able to carry on their mission, without thinking it through. The old addage, "when told to jump", a marine says, "yes sir" the other branches of the services would say, "how high", for "how long", etc.

Yes most marines hand their brains over at the entrance to boot camp. Alot of them just join to wear a uniform, if they dont make it into training alot of them either work in mcdonalds or burger king...even some getting into kfc.
