Why do the Marines seem to get all the publicity?
Find answers to your legal question.

Why do the Marines seem to get all the publicity?

I know the Army gets some too, but for every story I see involving soldiers there seems to be five about marines. I just don't understand why the Marines get so much more publicity when soldiers fight just as hard as Marines do and serve longer tours over seas.

Not to mention Army infantry on average see's just as much if not more combat than Marines. Army infantry's sole job is to fight, where as Marines also have the jobs of guarding and embassy and the president.

Now I'm not saying one is better than the other, because that's not true. I just want to know, why do you (meaning the public) hear so much more about Marines?
Additional Details
i meant guarding embassies, not guarding and embassy

Because they have prettier uniforms and talk the talk. Some of them even think they're unbeatable but as my son can tell you that ain't so unless there are more than two of them. good luck to you.

because most people look down on the Army because its so large and they pretty much take anyone, while Marines you have to be a special type of person

They have always had better PR (John Wayne movies).
Their recruiting commercials have always been better.

Because Marines ROCK!!

its because marines tend to do more special ops missions, whereas Army tends to do common missions. basically its because the marines missions are more exciting to cover.

because the marines do all the work not puttin army down or nothin the marines fight more so therfor they get more publicity plus there the badest guys out there and the ppl know it

Shutterbug Mama
I don't see that they do.

In fact, I think the army gets more publicity because of it's size.

Notice how people will say "soldiers" rather than specifying the branch...

'Cause They are the finest light infantry in the world.

I disagree with your premise: I see the Army getting most of the press coverage and general attention. The Marines are a small part of our military, and they deserve all the credit they get, but the Army gets more attention, IMHO.

Well I can tell you from fact why... I was part of the first ones in afghanistan and iraq beside probably special force who were getting intel....there is a book on 1st marine division during the initial push i was there and at one point we were the furthest in country.......we were the first in afghanistan because marine corp sends out deployments to travel and train all over the world and in case something like 911 happens then they are first force to react and we were exactly that....and i did go from marine to army and served there as well and well i don't want to get into that because i respect all my fellow brothers in arms so i will not put anyone down ...... just a little info before embassy duty is something only certain marines qualify to do there is more to what marines do then you know......i will always be proud of all military please support

Because you are hardened in the heart about Marines...when that happens, you begin to take notice of Marines being everywhere. If you began to have a distaste about the Chair Force...you'll begin to think that they will be hogging all the publicity. Because it is what you observe in your sub-conscious mind.

For example: I am not very fond of the Army [exception: their Infantry]...and all I see is that the Soldiers get all the publicity, therefore, I think the Army always gets all the credit - never see any credit due to the Marines.

Most people always talk about how the Army the ones that went in "first" - true, but those are most and only the SpecOps boys, in takes no-brainers that Dept. of Defense calls on USSOCOM for their rapid engagements...however, Marines are the "first" functional combat force that go in...logistics, ground forces, aviation, and command & control. Who else establishes the forward operating bases (FOB) for the Army's lengthly deployments?

xtreme2099
since this morning i seen at least 10 army commercials..no a single Marine commercial lol

but in general when you think about a Soldier you expect a normal looking guy and probably you seen a bad example of Soldier who tainted their image cause i seen it ,and when you think Us Marine you probably picture a physically fit tall guy with a fresh haircut like the commercial..,there is chubby Marines but they get hell for it ,they run run and run until the weight its off and our uniforms regulations are more strict if you roll your sleeves the wrong way you gonna probably hear it right there and get a long @ss chew..

ok, you might not understand this already, but the Marine Corps and Army's jobs are totally different. its not as similar as everybody makes it seem. let me break it down for you. Army's duty is to befriend the people around them, build trust and to MAINTAIN peace, even if maintianing peace calls for some gunfire. Marines job is simple: come in, do your job, go home. we dont care to make friends with anyone that we dont need to make friends with. We gaurd the embassy because who is more combat effecient?...really all bias to the side... who spends all their time in boot camp and even after perfecting the art of combat? Marines do. example...if your an accountant in the Army, you dont have to be qualified to shoot high scores, or be a certain standing in combatives. however, in the Marine Corps, in order to up your rank, not only do you have to be the best damn accountant there is, you have to shoot like a pro and fight like you've got nothing to lose. Army infantry and Marine infantry is totally different as well, as much as i respect the rangers, and deltas and all the other special ops guys, think about it...infantry and ranger school? an extra few months that only combat soldiers go through, while Marines go through 13 weeks of hell and infrantry school aftrawards just be as much as a cook? im not taking anything away from the Army guys, all im saying is that the things you go through to become a basic Marine, in every aspect is a lot rougher and people tend to take pride in that. compared to the Armys 1million plus active guys, cut that in more than half and you have the Marine Corps, we can do what a million soldiers can do with less than half the people and in half the time.

Just like you say everyone bases their opinions on commercials and tv, you seem to be doing the same. During the invasion of Iraq, there were two spearheads, one with the Marines, and one Army one. They do equal amount of work. As for embassy duty, that is a B billet MOS open to anyone in the Marine Corps, not just infantry. And tv is tv, they give the people what they want, for ratings. The people want Marines. Your whole rant seems very biased, perhaps you have Army relatives.
RekonDog has it right, Army spec ops are just that, the first full force is always the Marine Corps

Well first of all the Army has other jobs too... they actually have more jobs then the Marines. If anything the Marines sole job is to fight...

They see more publicity if you say so because they are on the front lines. The Army has some infantry units on the front line too but the majority of Army is a stable force. Meaning the Marines are a light armored light weaponed force going door to door while the Army comes in slower and with the big weapons...

The publicity comes with the pride and honor that you get when you go through Boot camp and fight for your country

justin
Allot of the publicity you see on T.V for whatever branch, might be based on where you live and whether or not there are army, navy, air force, or marine bases located nearby or in the general vicinity. That's just a guess, but down here in Texas we see much more army advertising that any other branch. And we have 2 army bases in Texas (Ft. Hood and Ft. Bliss).

Maybe you just notice it more I never pay attention to what the media says about any part of the military. When I was in iraq the last thing on my mind was whether the marines or army got more publicity I was more concerned about my family at home watching the news and worrying about me. If you care about what the media says then shouldn't be calling yourself a soldier. Cause they make both sides look bad everytime a soldier makes a mistake the whole military pays for it. Trust me I know when the whole Abu Ghraib happened I was in iraq and we had alot more attacks during that time. I don't trust or care what the media thinks cause I know I do my job as a soldier.

Because the Army is made up of a bunch a bums and they accept anyone and everyone, felons and all. The Marines are made up of the few and the proud and they are the model Americans. They get the job done with less supplies and support the the Army and are just overall better trained..........

John W
the marines are OVERATED dont you get it by now.... They are good when it comes to taking beaches and guarding building if not that montitoring traffic in iraq they are sea soldiers... Army infantry is just as good as the usmc infantry if not better especially aiborne and air assault infantry....Army was first in iraq and usually are last out... The marines think there the best because there brainwashed this from day 1 at boot camp. The US Army is older and has much much more history. Especially The 75th ranger regiment,Special Forces,Airborne,Calvary, combat engineers... etc etc The 1st marine division requested Army calvary in the invasion of Iraq and also repeated this request in Najif,Iraq...

The marines do 7month tours
The Army does over 1 year tours.

same reason why the marines are always getting in trouble for doing something stupid: they LOOOVE media attention. if they were like the army, especially the better units like the 82nd, then they would tell news teams and photographers and such that wanted to go out with them to **** off and all the jarheads that got in trouble for double tapping, etc would still be out serving their country instead of behind bars.
marines are all about public immage, its why if you ask someone in the USMC what they do they'll say: i'm a marine. thats it, all they care about is some title that honestly doenst mean jack in and of itself. ask a soldier what he does and he'll say "im an infantryman in the 82nd airborne" or "i'm a combat medic thats earned his CMB five times over" or something that has weight to it and proof of who they are.
army is definately not a clean up crew, and whoever says that is an idiot. Each area of Iraq/afghan belongs to a unit, and that unit does EVERYTHING there (unless its something special forces specific). raids, small kill teams, patrols, you name it. if you want an example of "how good" the marines are, look up the time line for falluja.
82nd takes it, controls it, and settles it down
82nd leaves because they've done their time, marines replace them
marines lose it in the first month, cant take it back
82nd comes back and takes it easily.
i'm honestly glad that my unit does not get the media attention the marines do, it means we can do what needs to be done without having to worry about going to jail for keeping our friends alive.
BTW to an above post: its not the job of combat units from the army to make friends...infact the only MOS that i know of who's job it is to do that are CA and SF. dont know who youve been talking to, but our job was to kill anyone who is or in all reasonable doubt could be an insurgent. ive talked to enough marines to know that marine boot camp is all drill and ceremony, not combat oriented. the army's infantry school is what? 15 weeks give or take? and ALL combat oriented. met enough infantry guys that dont even learn how to do a column until their osut graduation.
besides, who gives a **** about bootcamp unless thats all that you have to brag about? that and it doesnt matter how well a cook can shoot. cooks cook and clean up, thats all they do.
take half an infantry platoon from the 82nd thats been together for half a year, and watch them air assault into hadji's backyard, and raid a 10 mile strip of houses and tents in under 3 hours, then try telling me who's better.

jackson
You are correct pretty much all of the way around. Actually in all...... and your attitude and way of thinking would make you an asset to any branch.

There is a thing called a "hard core private" that does not get the military. That is what the Marines go after in the ads and such to sign people up. The young guys who want to get their testosterone up and be one of the few as per what the media says.

In 20 years I have seen much combat and have fought and worked with those from every service. Now I do mostly training but I still work with people from every service. A lunch meeting means every uniform.

Your friend is simply full of it.

Trav
they have the most ad money?

Rick
Marine infantry better than Army infantry? I seriously doubt it. Marines always say they are better simply because they train longer. I never heard any of them explain it any further than that. For all we know they may just learn slower. I don’t know about you marines, but in the Army we don’t stop training when Boot camp and Infantry school are over. That training longer bit doesn’t hold any water. Marines always speak in very superficial generalities like that, as if they were just told that this was a truth and are now repeating it over and over without any further explanation, as if they were a parrot. Explain it to us. And this myth about always being the first in and the last out is just that, a myth. It is just another thing Marines keep repeating over and over like a parrot. If they would bother to look at the bigger historical picture they would be able to see that fact for themselves. And this B.S. about going in and securing the beach head for the Army to come in later, tell it to all those Army Infantrymen who were caught in the meat grinder known as Omaha beach on “D” Day. Where were you then tough guy? Marines think that if they repeat all these things to people long enough they will believe it. The only ones who believe it are people who are as shallow and as gullible as they are. The most decorated American military unit is the 442nd infantry regiment of the U.S. Army. The most highly decorated military service member was an Army infantry officer by the name of Robert Howard. The most decorated war hero before that was an infantryman of the U.S. Army 3rd infantry division by the name of Audie Murphy. And just so you know, the Navy has been awarded more Medals of Honor than The Marines. You can look it up. Now that I have let all the air out of your tires, maybe all you Marines can climb down off your imaginary pedestal and join reality. I am not saying that the Army infantry is any better than the Marine infantry; I am just saying that the Marines are very mistaken in their thinking that they are better. I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to you all for your service. I am a veteran of the U.S. Army Infantry.

Kzghost
To wizofoz, the marines Definatly do not get more special ops missions, the army does, the army and navy do the bulk of special operations, marines do the more common missions, the marines only have recon which is more of a conventional warfare special team for the regular infantry marines. The army has the rangers, airborne, special forces, and delta force. And a lot of marine recon training is done by the army, like airborne school, army pathefinder school . Also many mos's for marines are taught by the army, like military police. The army gets less credit because it is being so streched thin because it is doing so many missions, the DoD and pentagon goes to the army and navy first for ops. The marines just use a lot of propaganda to make it seem like they do so much, when in reality, they don't. Now I am not bashing the marines, they are a good branch and we need them, they are a good fighting force. But not the best, no branch is, cause you cannot compare all of them, they all do different things. They all spend money on different things; the marines spend it on publicity and advertising, the amry spends on new tech and wastes some on all the different camo changes, and the navy spends it's money on research and development.
