It probably should have been declassified a long time ago, but there may have been indentification systems still in use that the military was using up until the 2005 report...I am a police dispatcher, and it's just not as black & white to determine the truth or falsity of a claim as you seem to think it is, not in 2008 and certainly not in 1964...obviously something happened those nights, and the perception was that they had been attacked...I don't deny that there may have been a good deal of paranoia and unsubstantiated claims, but if there are American servicemen in danger, it's not our job to let them continue to be sitting ducks by tying their hands....you're looking at this incident from the comfort of it being over 40 years in the past...yes, Vietnam was a disaster for America, but we couldn't have known that in 1964. The choice was to either run away or stay and fight to help our friend...So I don't believe that it was just a "lie" and that's the end of the story...mistakes were made, and the best anybody can do is try to learn from the mistakes... |

Well I think that some in the US government wanted to make war against North Vietnam because they thought it was right to do so in a fight against communism. Not saying it was right, it was wrong to do so, but I think that was their reason.
By the way, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (or North Vietnam then), is not a Democracy in any sense of the word. |

It was because our government felt they needed another reason to put more troops on the ground. before this incident, we apparently weren't "fully involved". After, the amount of troops there quadrupled.
Simply, it was an excuse. |

The USA didn't lie...
Just a few people in the White house did...
Which were controlled by Big Business...
and the Military Industrial Complex...
Just as Eisenhower warned us about in his Last speech !!!!
Kennedy was not going to sent American Troops
to Vietnam...just some Adviser's...
That is why he was assassinated in Dallas
by Johnson and his mob...who by the way
were Democrats....
Vietnam 58,000+ KIA,
Korea Thousands KIA.
WW II....A million + KIA,
WW I...200,000KIA
All these Wars started by Democrats in the White House...
They are prolonging this War... |

The American ego is that causes them to lying.
They have to be the best and if they are not then they deny the truth.
Just look at the mess their country is in and you can see for yourself the lies that are told do not just relate to wars.
Unemployment and poverty is out of control. not to mention the profiteering by corporation and the grab for copy rites to all of nature.
It amounts to controlling every thing to do with peoples right they know that most people do not have the money to take court action to invoke the constitution. a constitutional Lawyer as free range to charge what ever he likes. usually that is out of site of all reason. |

we re-write history all the time. It's called revisionism. The Israelites made a golden calf and said that it delivered them from the Egyptians. |

There are many ongoing investigations that may be compromised by an admission to that incident. Although, as a general rule the govt is covering up many things to avoid prosecution, you still have to have faith in the system. They are doing what is best for the country. To believe and act otherwise may be considered as treason. On the bright side, it isnt likely they are trying to cover up atrocities as bad as other countries. |

Cirrection, North Vietnam was and did make the entire country both North and South (South was a democracy) a communist state. Second of all there were 2 attacks. The first did happen, the second one as you pointed out is a little iffy. |

The US 'prefers' a 'pretext' to escalate violence. With a pretext we have a 'pre-emptive' tactical victory in propaganda.
We have a long historical record of this and engage in it almost on a daily basis involving Iraq. Truth is always the 1st casualty of conflict. It also drives a divisive wedge into the country making us easier to manipulate. Win-Win.
Rather than ask 'permission' today, we can beg 'forgiveness' 40 years from now - the dead will be buried, few will notice, less will care. |
