Why do the military people tell me to hush up?

The military people have a right to tell you to shut up, just as you have the right to say what you want, and to tell THEM to shut up.

When the Republican party or the actual government says this, however, we're on dangerous grounds. And they HAVE equated free speech with anti-American activities and even treason. So far, no prosecutions have happened and no special legislation has been enacted. But if the Democrats don't take the House or Senate or both, I predict that these restrictions WILL be enacted.

Erudite.....if I understand you right, you left the Air Force and then tried the Navy. That means you have 2 discharges vice one listed. Based on some basic facts, I must assume that one discharge, your last one, was OTH. My reason for this assumption is the fact that you are umemployed. Being in the military we fight for you right to say all the things that you have said.. But on the other hand they way i like to look at it is if you don;t like something then you have the right to move out.

There was a saying years back "Loose lips sink Ships" which most likely would apply to someone like you. Why don't you just do as your told by those of us that have wore our uniforms with dignity and pride and love this country of ours for the freedoms we fought for so you can enjoy the freedoms of life. Duty, Honor and Country are our motto's..... so as another Vet... SHUT UP.

I am an army reserve vet and i havent told you to shut up yet. The others have bought the rhetoric hook, line and sinker. I know that they want to keep morale high but they should at least question how a government can skimp on Flak vests and armored vehicles.

First Amendment works both ways. You have the right to pass your garbage off as fact. The rest of the public, whether military or no, has the right to tell you to stuff it. Only when libel, acts of violence, and wrongful incarceration come into play are these rights moderated.

As for the rest of this ... garbage you embrace:

(1) Reagan was elected in 1980, not 1984. Regardless of what you think of the man, his stance from 1980-88 was instrumental in resisting the Soviet Union. The Clinton era of 1992-2000 saw excellent progress in the economy and the ruinous dismantling of the Cold War military, as well as abject failures in foreign policy from Somalia to North Korea, Rwanda to Bosnia, Haiti to Kosovo. More small conflicts emerged during the Clinton era than under both Bush presidencies combined.

(2) The Roman Republic collapsed not because its ideals died, but because a hard core of reactionary figures in the Senate wanted to preserve their wealth and prestige at the expense of the State, resisting to the last the reforms of men like Gaius Marius and Caesar. Augustus and Agrippa did more for the state in a year than a dozen weak consuls such as Cicero ever did for Rome during their entire tenure.

(3) The Weimar Republic was a sham. It was unable to maintain the territorial integrity of Germany, and was a slave to the Treaty of Versailles. No republic that lets its territory be occupied and its industrial output stolen deserves to be called a government. No republic can survive when it does not redeem national pride in the face of constant humiliation from its neighbors. That is why the German people were seduced by National Socialism.

(4) The "quest for oil" as you put it, is essential to America. You've probably not acquainted yourself with the subject (likely not read even such a basic primer on the subject as Daniel Yergin's "The Prize") but carbon-based fuels have been the backbone of civilization since the Industrial Age. Energy alternatives are not "solved" overnight, especially since your kind of rabble is exactly the sort that is against nuclear reactors, against hydroelectric power, and against the sort of personal sacrifices that make energy rationing a reasonable measure.

(5) Your personal hatred for the incumbent President does in no way improve upon the shockingly bad quality of your writing, or the poverty of your ideas. You are not anything other than a problem. Your whiny, incoherent mewling is exactly why conservative hacks who fancy themselves experts in geopolitics can disregard serious criticism from the center and the left. Your ilk hiding in the ranks brings down the repute of everyone who has both genuine ideas for reform and the courage to implement them.

You aren't saving the nation from anything - you are giving it to morons on a silver platter with your ignorance and your strident insistence on taking the fiction of a moral high ground to heart, while offering draconian criticism cooked up in ignorance as some sort of remedy for the world's ills. Idiots like you alienate those in the military and government who are a force for moderation, and those in the public who would rather stay quiet and avoid opposition to the current administration than be associated with the likes of you.

People like you do the work of Wolfowitz and Feith. If you had half the sense to understand the sort of damage you're doing to the political discourse in this country, you'd end your lives for shame. As it is, you revel in publicly antagonizing everything and everyone but those who share your narrow-minded and fallacious concept of how the nation should be.

You are a disgrace to humanity and the antithesis of rational thought. Your pointless, whiny insults and the plethora of so-called "questions" and mindless gratification of your ego demonstrate that you are neither credible or a man of any gravitas. Feel free to exercise your First Amendment rights that others fight to defend. That's right, the same men and women in the military who you freely slander and revile, who would give their lives for you and every other civilian regardless of nationality, on principles far higher than those you embrace or could possibly understand.

There are men and women who make all the difference in the world. You're not one of them.

The problem I have with your questions it that you seem to have forgotten to support the troops, you sound like the sort of person who stood around airports spitting at returning soldiers and yelling "baby killer" I don't understand why you are so down on the institution of the military but your questions are not helpful and serve simply to make people angry not to make them think or to educate yourself(the supposed purpose of this forum).

My husband is currently in Iraq fighting for your right to freedom of speech. You need to realize that there are people who are doing what needs to be done to ensure that you can sit at your computer and act like my two year old daughter when she wants a cookie before dinner. My husband is risking his life in Baghdad as we speak to give you the opportunity to be more than what you are. You state that Rome and Germany were republics too and went the way of fascism. Please tell me you haven't made the fatal mistake of the ill-educated and politically non-astute and believe that republic is the same as Republican and the democracy is the same as Democrat.

The reason why Rome fell is beacuse of decadence (the people did not want to fight & wanted to live a high life) & she wasn't a republic when she fell. WW2 Germany fell beacuse of incompetence - by the way, she wasn't a republic then.

The reason why many American troops suffer is beacuse of clowns like you.
It's bad enough they have to fight wars & die on foreign soil. It's even worse that they died protecting people who not only shun the military but spit on them.
